File transfer over Wifi is painfully slow.....normal?

Thread Starter
I have always been hard wired...however, as I have moved house into a multi floor property, I have transferred to wireless.

My main PC is upstairs, and is connected via a 300Mbps PCI card to a Wireless N router (excellent signal).

My HTPC is downstairs, and is connected via a 150Mbps USB card to the same Wireless N router (excellent signal).

When dragging a file from one pc to the other (using Windows 7 drive share), I am getting 1MB/s transfer speeds v 150MB/s via Ethernet previously.

Please tell me this is something I can fix...as this is killing me. I know I wont get ethernet speeds, but never ever imagined it would be this slow..... I have actually resorted to putting stuff onto a USB stick and running down stairs to move it.

You are limited by the slowest connection.150MBps is 18.75MBps at best and without TCP/IP overheads, depending on your signal 1MBps is about right

USB wifi adapters tend to be slower then PCi wif cards, do to low amperage out put from USB ports. Thus less power to USB Wifi card and you get slow transfer rate.

With Proper PCI Wifi card, you should see around 4-5MB/s transfer speed.

Also disable TCP Auto Tuning on both computers.
