Did my brand new Sapphire HD 7870 GPU just die?

Was hanging out online, not gaming, nothing intensive when my monitor goes black. These black screens are supposedly common for this video card so I didn't think too much of it despite how utterly annoying it is. My monitor snaps back on to say "HDMI NO SIGNAL." Figured the cable had gone bad. Replaced the HDMI cable and got the same message. Finally pulled out a brand new DVI cable and still got the same message when flipping to the DVI input on my monitor. Finally had to pull the GPU and put in my old Nvidia 9800 GTX. Everything is working fine now.

What in the hell just happened?

Sounds like a dead GPU to me. If it happened all of a sudden one of the capacitors on that card may have gone dead. Don't quote me on this though...

Do you get the motherboard beeps for no video card detected when you turn your computer on with the 7870? If so this could also mean the GPU got unseated (probably because of movement of the casing?) and reseating it would hopefully resolve your issue.

No mobo beeps. Just put the card back in and booted up. The hdmi signal is working but it brings me to the bios screen and stops. My keyboard and mouse aren't working. After a hard reset it does the same thing. So... Signal is back but now my computer won't actually boot.

So, you see everything untill the PC boots from the HDD?

Could this be due to inadequate ventilation or overclocking? Despite this gpu being the overclock edition? I used my gtx 9800 for upwards of 5 years and never had an issue... Granted... I never overclocked with it.

Try reseating the GPU one more time just for the heck of it. You got nothing to lose and that might just fix your issue. Don't forget to get right in there and get it in as nicely as possible. And don't forget to screw it up (lol?) too but not too tight.

If all else fails, try the GPU on another PC. If you get the same issue, it's time to RMA the card. Good luck!

Of course. She seats well and is all screwed down snug. I'm on my phone and restarted... Got past the bios and am now looking at the desktop. The hell? I didn't touch anything... Just sat here in misery

Probably not IMO, but if you still have warranty on it (which I am sure you do) just return/RMA it.

Well cheers on getting it to work again. PC components can be a very mysterious thing sometimes. Don't forget to stress test your GPU with something like Heaven Benchmark just to make sure that your card isn't faulty.
