To upgrade or not to upgrade?

Thread Starter
Long story short, I have been running my dual X5650 system since early 2010, and recently my motherboard decided to take a crap on me, I was running a Tyan S7002AG2NR nevertheless I've gotten a good 3 years out of it.

The specs:
Lian Li PC-90 (Recent addition)
Motherboard: Tyan S7002AG2NR
2x - Xeon X5650s
6x - Kingston 8GB = 48GB total.
Adaptec 6805 w/ 4 x 250GB Western digitals in RAID10 and 2 x 60GB Intel 520 SSDs (Recent addition).
GPU: nVidia Quadro 2000D (Recent addition)
OS: CentOS 6.3

The machine was mainly used for parallel computing, running several VMs usually no more than 5, to sum it up it was a software development/data mining workstation. Xeons never broke a sweat though, and I feel that they're more than enough even nowadays. In short it has never been used for games, multimedia or such as it is for work only. So I am thinking should I just get an ASUS Z8NA-D6 and continue on my merry way.

However since I work in a datacenter, I have access to E5 Xeons which I can buy relatively cheap, 350/400 for each E5-2643 which is 4C/8T as even on my current Xeons I haven't been using more than 8 cores at full capacity. However I don't like the format of the current LGA2011 boards as I am very picky when it comes to expansion slots, as you can see Z8NA-D6 has 1 X16 slots and 2 x4 in x8 slots which in my opinion have more than enough bandwidth for the hard-drives and I don't feel like getting an EATX board since it is overkill for me and most SSI-CEB boards for LGA2011 don't have a full X16 slots with the exception of ASUS Z9PA-D8. According to the benchmarks E5-2643 is about 13-14% faster than the X5650.

So what I'd like to know if its worth upgrading. Either way ya'll get a build log as I have to clean the parts, and migrate over to the new case.

Yes, there are quite a few things you could do...

Get a i7 3770k (1155 socket)

Get a i7 3930k (2011 socket)

Get a FX8350 (AM3+ socket)

The 8350 is very good with multihtreaded things, better than 3770k. The 3930k is a complete workhorse, it will do anything you ask it, but more expensive. The 3770k is the 1155 king, but both teh above are better at multithreaded stuff

You could also wait until June and get a Haswell build

Im not familiar with Xenon's at all, but after reading your post, and a quick google search, i would think you should get as much out of those cpus as you can, as they're still viable for you. Plus you'll save a bundle of money, and not have to search for a board you like. MY 2cents.gifthumb.gif

He did say that he didnt need so much power so I said a very high end consumer one, and also... the 8350 has better multithreaded performance

I am already running a daily pc w/ 2700k and dual 670s. This PC is strictly for software development/qa/testing. I develop applications for multi cpu servers and workstations, if that wasn't the case I'd probably be rocking a Xeon E3. But having access to a dual CPU system is necessary for the line of work I do.

Since this workstation is on 24/7 it is crucial for me to not have any downtime, which is why I prefer commercial grade hardware. Working in a datacenter, you see many things happen that are not supposed to happen.

Yeah, and that fancy 3770K doesnt even support ECC memory - nor does anything in socket 2011 unless it's got the word Xeon in front of it. The 8350 however, does. Needless to say though, neither are a solution for a pair of cpus with 6 real cores and 12 virtual cores.

Build quality on high end enthusiast motherboards has improved to where it's as good or better than "commercial" motherboards IMO, provided you don't let the boards around with voltages and the like. However, you're not going to get registered memory to work on any enthusiast class motherboard, and I can guarantee the OP has registered memory.

With those chips, I'd just get a new motherboard and call it a day, or sell them and upgrade to a dual socket 2011 motherboard. That's going to get pricey though. Provided the old hardware had enough grunt to get the job done, I'd just get a new motherboard.

Thread Starter
I have decided to upgrade to either Xeon E5-2650 or E5-2670. There will be a build and planning log coming as soon as I get my tax refund. smile.gif
