OP if you want to connect 3 monitors you need an active minidisplayport to single link DVI adapter for the third monitor.

with two of these cards could you use the hdmi on both cards and dvi to do triple monitors

No. For AMD even if you CF all monitor connections are to be done from a single card. What connectors do your monitors have ?
