[Build Log] - Sylent Green

Hi everybody! Welcome to my first CaseLabs (and second watercooled) build log!

Why go CaseLabs? Why the Magnum M8?

I hadn’t heared of CaseLabs before, but then I got sucked into Cpachris’s TH10 build log and decided to check them out. After a lot of deliberation I decided the M8 was most suited to what I wanted to do. The build quality is really amazing, but something went wrong with mine anyway (more on this later). And it’s roomy, so future upgrades will be possible. The delivery was a pain, it took USPS 4 days to even move the case outside of California and then it got stuck in Belgian customs for another week. Oh, and deciding which options I wanted with the case also took a lot of time, but you can hardly blame CaseLabs for this biggrin.gif

Why Sylent Green?

Well, not because it’s made out of people (that I know of). This is the first time I’ll actually be doing some cosmetic stuff, and the accent color will be green. So it should be silent and partially green, so Silent Green. Which kind of sounds like Soylent Green, so Sylent Green it is.

How ‘bout some pictures?

I’m also getting back into my other hobby photography, so you’ll get some reasonably decent pictures from my Canon 600D/T3i. I’ll try to put an effort in and make sure I document as much as possible.

Electronics parts list?

The electronics will mostly be carried over from my current rig, so nothing out of the ordinary.
The motherboard is an Asus P8Z68-V pro/gen3 with an Intel i5 2500K and 4x4GB PC12800 Corsair Vengeance RAM. I looked into changing to a Z77 motherboard that was more in line with the black and green theme, but decided against it and will be waiting for Haswell. That being said, if I stumble upon a decently priced, passively cooled Z77 board with 2 USB3.0 headers and the right colors…
A single 128GB Crucial M4 SSD drive for the OS (though if the Intel RST drivers support TRIM on a RAID array I might move to RAID 0) and a few 2TB and 3TB HDDs for storage.

Cooling and other parts list?

Cooling will be taken care of by 2 Alphacool Nexxxos UT60 360mm rads (one new, one from the old rig), a Swiftech MCP35x pump mounted on a Koolance 401x2 bay res (might be swapped out for something else) and a Koolance CPU-370 CPU block.
Throw in some Scythe Gentle Typhoons and control all this with a watercooled Aquaero 5 LT, a flow meter and some temperature sensors.
Add some UV green tubing and BitsPower fittings and you’ve got a loop.
I’ll also be adding some green LEDs and CCFLs, and swapping out the case’s standard blue LED power switch for a green one.

You forgot to mention your GPU in the parts list?

No, I didn’t. I don’t game, so no graphics cards.

So why watercool if you don’t game?

Because it makes less noise than air. Because I can. Because I want to. Because it’s a hobby. Because it looks nice. Take your pick.

Where did you get your inspiration?

Cpachris’s BBBB build was a major source of inspiration, but not the only one. I’ve checked out several build log and read through several threads, lots of them giving me ideas, so I’m just paying a little forward.

Are you sure?

Nope. All of this is of course subject to change, I might change my mind or find something too difficult/time-consuming/expensive. I’ll see as I go along.

Let's get started!

As I said earlier, something went wrong with my M8. It all looked really promising, it came really well packaged in a big sturdy box:

Just as I had read in all the reviews it was packed with nice foam corners, about an inch thick:

Unfortunately I also got a nice enclosed bill for customs taxes, that's another 100 euros added to the bill mad.gif
Guess it's only fair though, as they apparently had to study it for an entire week before they were sure it wasn't packed full of cocaine.

So what went wrong?

Well, this:

And again from a different angle:

It looks like somewhere during shipping the box was dropped or a heavy load was stacked on top of it, causing the 85mm ventilated top to tear open. Yay USPS!
It's not a big tear, but the entire bottom rear of the top is stretched outward a little. Also the clips that hold the top in place have taken a beating, so they don't really click anymore.
Luckily the case itself is not damaged.

Hello CaseLabs?

I mailed Jim at CaseLabs immediately after I had taken some pics to show what happened. He was very helpful and I got a reply pretty quickly (taking into account there is a 9 hour time difference between Belgium and California). He promised to ship a replacement right away and filed a claim with USPS on my behalf.
Thanks Jim!

At least it is not an essential part to start with, so I can go ahead with my build.

Show me the parts!

Okay then. I've got a box of them:

Some Aquacomputer stuff, like an Aquaero 5 LT:

This came in a simple cardboard box, no anti-static bag or foam. I'm so hoping it's not damaged.
The AQ5 will be watercooled, and indeed a Bitspower 3/8 - 5/8 fitting will not clear the screws on the top of the waterblock (by half a millimeter):

At this point I was still waiting for the case to be delivered and still needed some more fittings, so another order was fired off to the local watercooling shop, resulting in this tasty box of Bitspower hardware:

And an AQ5 LT with block and fittings:

Does this look sexy or is it just me:

(if you don't agree with me on the sexiness, you might be on the wrong forum wink.gif )

It's getting late now

It's 3am here, so I'll just post 2 more teaser shots of the Magnum M8 and then I'm signing off.

Laterz!

Subbed! looking forward to where this goes, I'm about to be doing a white SM8 with green accents build myself, so I highly approve! Sucks about the damage, it seems like the bigger the box the more chance it will get broken on the way.

Subburidos ! Shame on the USPS ... all the way to Belgium, too mad.gif Luvving your fotog skills, teasers ! forgot all about that important part of a log wink.gif
Thats a bit of a shocker about how the AQ5 was packaged. The M8 is the bomb when it comes to the doublewide CL cases. If not for the Merlins pulling me in, it would have been this one biggrin.gif

ADD: oh yah, great one on the naming of the build, NEAT !

Subbed! Looking forward to seeing what you do with it, I certainly am loving mine although I wish I had more time to spend with it since I'm stuck at the office too much lately. Sorry to hear about the top but not surprised at all about the great customer service... that's at least 20% of the reason to do business with Jim (the other 80% being the superior product naturally). And I agree on the great photography... that's one of the major failings of my build log - but not knowing where my tripod and lights are didn't help any.

Really looking forward to this - especially the aesthetics since that's something I haven't really addressed with mine yet. biggrin.gif
