It's got parts from Newegg, Best Buy, even Walmart (just the mouse), and some that have been salvaged from older OEM PCs, such as the DVD writer, all-in-one card reader, and one of the hard drives, all of which have been passed down from build to build since my Acer Athlon 64 PC I purchased in 2006"

I don't suppose your OS drive is the one from '06? thinking.gif

Ha, well noticed, I clearly didn't read the OP closely enough. I reckon that'll be the problem!

Have you checked the SMART Status of your HDD? It may be failing. Go to the Health Tab in HDTune and post a screenshot. Try swapping SATA cables and ports.

Don't just blindly listen to anyone and go buy an SSD.

C'mon guys, The only answer most of you have got is get an SSD?!

HDD's aren't that slow! wink.gif

I call this a troll, OP haven't respond or anything. If not a troll then tell us how you came with a *2min* boot time, is it a rough guess or was it timed up?

Without an SSD my rig boots up in under 15 seconds. Double check your drivers and make sure your ram is running the frequencys they should be running.

Also if you are using an old hard drive, that could be the issue. Scrap it and get a new one.

Thread Starter
Thanks for all the responses. I'll look into an SSD, but the issue is that there's no way I'm going to get enough space for all my programs on an SSD for a reasonable price. I currently only have 115 GB left of 650 GB, and my Documents and user account stuff are all symlinked over to the 2 TB storage drive. Yes, I've uninstalled a lot of stuff to try to free up more space (100 GB remaining on the OS drive isn't comforting), but I go to college for Computer Animation, so I have to have Adobe CS6 Master Collection, 3DS Max, Maya, etc. installed on here, and those are gigantic. So I have about 500 GB worth of programs installed alone, and only the OS and program files are on the main drive.

Yes, the main drive is the 2006 one. It only has a 16 MB cache (which for the time was pretty good).

I'm aware that I *could* also symlink the program files over to a storage drive as well and just keep ONLY the OS on the SSD, but what's the point then? If all my programs are still running off of a mechanical HDD, there won't be much noticeable performance gain, I'm guessing. But I'd much rather stripe two 512 GB SSDs in RAID 0 and use the resulting 1TB for the OS/programs. Unfortunately, that would cost about $800 at minimum to do.

As mentioned by a few people already though, I don't think it's just the drive(s), if the problems I described even have anything to do with the drives. Applications don't normally hang when trying to close them, or take extended periods of time to open with a normal HDD, and outside of gaming, this rig actually feels slower than my old Phenom II x4 965 that had 1066 RAM and a crappy $50 Biostar mATX board. This one kills it at gaming, but the 965 rig seemed faster at virtually every day-to-day task, which seems ass backwards to me.

I will stress test all the parts again and check all the Windows logs this weekend and see if I can find anything.

And yes, for those wondering, the $2500 price includes my two monitors (~$750 of it right there), chair ($150), mouse ($30), speakers ($70), headset ($100), Windows 8 ($100), etc. The tower cost about $1,200 or so to build by itself. Just to clarify smile.gif
