RAM, CPU OC Question/Help needed please!

Thread Starter
If someone is willing, I am having issues trying to get my G.Skill Ripjaws up to their rated speeds. I am seeking help on the G.Skill forum but so far hasn't yielded any results.

Spec:
AMD FX-4100 no OC (~3.6)
mobo:Gigabyte GA-970A-D3, rev. 1.1, version F11
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series (2x8GB) 1866 model -- (F3-14900CL10D-16GBXL), but running at 1333.
AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB (ASUS HD7850-DC2-2GD5-V2)
650W PSU
Air cooling

http://gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=12125

^^That's my thread that I have tried so far.

I am having a lot of trouble finding voltages that are "optimized," but I need to adjust the timings of the RAM as well. When I tried to adjust the timings in AMD OverDrive, it froze the system.

This is copy+paste of my last post, and where I'm at now...which is not much further than when I started:

Analysis of BIOS settings:

Advanced BIOS settings: Normal -- Change

Load Line Control: Auto -- Regular
AMD C1E Support: Auto -- Disabled
AMD C6 Support: Enabled -- Disabled
AMD K8 Cool&Quiet Control: Auto -- Disabled
AMD APM Master Mode: Auto -- Disabled

Power Management:

ACPI Suspend Type S3(STR) -- Is S1 better? More interested in S1 unless it leads to performance issues.
Soft-Off by Power Button: Insta-Off
USB Wakeup from S3: Enabled
Modem Ring Resume: Disabled
PME Event Wakeup: Enabled
HPET Support: Enabled
Power on by mouse: Disabled
Power on by keyboard: Disabldd
AC Back Function: Soft-Off
Power on by alarm: Disabled
ErP Support: Disabled

PC Health Status:

Hardware Thermal Control: Enabled
CPU Warning Temp: Disabled -- 60C
CPU Fail Warning: Disabled -- Enabled
System Fan1 Warning: Disabled -- Enabled
System Fan2 Warning: Disabled -- Enabled
Power Fan Warning: Disabled -- Enabled
CPU Smart Fan Control: Auto -- Disabled
System Smart Fan Control: Auto -- Disabled

I tried using AMD Overdrive with the numbers you linked and the computer froze.

I then worked on trying to adjust within the BIOS (just changes, defaults already noted, refer to link above):
CPU Clock Ratio: x20, 4500/5000; x18
CPU NB Frequency: x11, 2475; x10; x12
Core Performance Boost: Disabled
CPB Ratio: Auto (greyed out)
CPU Host Clock Control: Manual
CPU Frequency: 225, 233, 250
PCIe: 100
HT Link Width: 16bit
HT Link Frequency: x12;x10
DRAM EOCP: not been helpful at all. Does not optimize voltage.
Set Memory Clock: Manual
Memory Clock: x6.66, x8, etc.
DRAM Configuration: (AMD Overdrive is easier UI with more options)
***System Voltage (NOT) Optimized (!!!)***: Not optimized, no boot.
System Voltage Control: Manual
CPU PLL Voltage Control:
DRAM Voltage Control:
DDR VTT Voltage Control:
NB Voltage Control:
HT Link Voltage Control:
NB/PCIe/PLL Voltage Control:
CPU NB VID Control:
CPU Voltage Control:
Normal CPU Vcore: 1.3750

If anyone is willing to work with me or has any suggestions, they are greatly appreciated! I'm really frustrated with the brick wall I've hit so far.

I have ver 3 of that mobo and it will not allow mem volts over 1.5. you can change the timings but not the voltage. Every time I tried to set mem voltage to 1.65V it would fail to boot windows. and revert back to 1.5V

So what can I do to get my RAM to rated 1866 or even 1600 then? I had read suggestions on OC cpu which is why I included information and in title, but I thought that the voltages need to +V to do that? What kind of settings would you recommend ?

Hai. I have read the tread you've linked. I have no idea if Kyfire is right, if he is maybe try bios update?

Els:

1. First set DRAM V to 1.65v (Don't worry, it's proberly stated to be 1.6 in the SPD performance profil)
Save and exit bios
2. Set main timings to 9-9-9-24 -> Timings for 1866 stated 9-10-9-28 on newegg
Save and exit bios
3. Set 1600 MHz
Save and exit bios

That is that most stable way i know to change settings (You can try doing it in one shot if you like)

I don't think you can OC you're CPU mush since your temps are so high.

Does your mobo have the GIGABYTE Dual UEFI BIOS? Mine does and the menus are different from what I see in the manual for your Rev 1.1 board.

I did not originally have the correct Bios version, I had F7, but I updated to F11 that is the current version. Should I do that per stick, one at time (take out put back in) or can I do both at same time. Set 1600 -- manual or use EOCP? Everytime I use the EOCP it seems to mess things up.

It says I have...(some similar?), but I guess I do not know how to use it: "Patented DualBIOS with Hybrid EFI technology for 3TB HDD support" -- Thought this was only for large HDD. Mine is 640GB.

The GA970A boards only support 1.5 volt ram. Until I figured that out I was pulling my hair trying to get my Kingston Hyper X 1600 to run at 1600 not the 1333 the mobo was setting it at. In BIOS i9 was able to set it to 1600 and to set each channel's timings but NOT the voltage, so my 1600 ram is running at 1.5V instead of 1,.65V

I'm not familiar with your mainboard sry

It was just what i had to do to my brand new "Kingston HyperX KHX2133C11D3/4GX". They where also stuck at 1.5, needed 1.6 for 1600 Mhz needed 1.65 to reach 1980 (My mainboards max)... And they where also sold as 1.5v memory rolleyes.gif

Yea, in Kingston's great wisdom they set the SPD to show the 1600 at 1333. And leaves it up to the end user to figure out how to set it right in BIOS.
