Help with E6300 OC (GA-P965-DS3)

Thread Starter
Yep, Modki's posting a "help a n00b thread"! While I have tons of experience in other areas i've never actually overclocked a CPU (unless you count those overdrive interfaces for the 486's).

Setup
The one in my system Spec, but for quick reference:
E6300
GA-P965-DS3 (Revision 1, F6 Bios.)
OCZ Gold 2x512 (Dual Channeled, 5-5-5-12, 2.0v)
7900GT KO

What I have learned from reading threads
I know that I want to lock the PCI-Express to 100Mhz, disabled the Thermal Throttling stuff, and disable the legacy usb, printer, and com port. I've also seen stuff about MCH, VDIMM, and Memory Multipliers all pretty much the same.

Specific Questions
1. I have 2.0v RAM and the board wants to load it @ 1.8v from my understanding, it boots up just fine. Do I need to change this or is it already detected? If I do is it the VDIMM setting and by how much should I increase it?
2. Is 100Mhz PCIe right for the 7900GT KO? How do I tell what I need?
3. Is there any program that will tell me what the right settings for a certain clock speed is?? i.e. put in "2.5Ghz" and it gives you Vcore, Timings, etc??

Right now it's at 2.1Ghz I'll post the specific settings I put in based on what I read when I get home. I'm going to keep going up until I hit 50Cº load then start saving for better cooling and a new power supply.

Is the DS4 the same as the DS3? Basically I know what each setting effects and generally which to increase in what order, but I don't know the exact amount to increase them by. Is there some sort of formula or a overclocking calculator?

To determine the FSB you will need you take the speed you want for the processor and divide by the multiplier for that processor (in your case 7x). That will give you the frequency that youll manually put into your motherboard. EX:
3.0GHz/7=428FSB

To determine what that will be in overclock for the RAM you multiply the FSB number by 2 (because its DDR, dual data rate, RAM). EX:
428x2=856MHz

VCore is pure trial and error. If its not stable at the speed youve set it to then try to up the voltage a smidgen and check the temperatures while you check the stability.

The same story for RAM timings except theres less worry for temperature. If its not stable at its frequency then lossen the timings until it becomes stable.

If you want to undervolt your RAM that is fine just dont expect to reach the same levels as you would if you operated your RAM at its intended 2.0v values. You can safely, and within warrentee, put your RAM at its intended 2.0v values and not worry though as it has been designed specifically for those values.

1) My RAM posted and was "fine" at 2.55v, but it wanted 2.66v. It seemed ok like I said, but it wasn't 100% stable. Just bump it up to 2v.

2) Not that I know of. No real reason to either. Should be able to do 2.5Ghz on stock vcore, anyway.

BTW - got a question for you. Whats the max vdimm (memory voltage) you can do? I'm planning on getting it. Don't want to be limited in the voltage department though.

Okay 2506Mhz!! I reached my goal for now and it wasn't hard at all.

FSB 358 @ 1.33 Vcore
45Cº Idle / 60Cº Load (TAT) and about 48Cº is all it got up to last night doing regular stuff I always do. Super Pi 1M of 22s

What do you guys think? I'm not going to go further for now, but I still don't understand if I should change my VDIMM, (G)MCH, or Memory Multiplier. Any recommendations? I left em default and windows runs fine from what I can tell. I put it back down to stock though since I don't notice much difference really and I don't want to chance anything. I will need a better cooler because I want to keep it down around 40Cº tops.

Well to help, here are settings I used to reach 2.8ghz on my DS3 (motherboard I had before moving to P5B-Deluxe):

FSB: 400
Memory Multiplier: 2X
PCIE: 100mhz
Spread Spectrum: Disabled
Vcore: 1.3250V (stock)
VMCH: stock
VICH: stock

For your OCZ Gold 2x512 memory settings I recommend:
Vdimm: +.2V (2.0V)
Timings: 5-5-5-12

Hitting 60C under load is a bit high for that chip so you might consider down clocking a bit. Theres no need to up voltages (except on RAM intended for such treatment) unless you need to and as you reached the level you were hoping for I would keep the other voltages on auto. Better safe and happy than unsafe and risking unhappiness =) Otherwise congrats!
