FX DOWN FX DOWN!!!! - Page 2

I tried to OC my memory last night, and I hosed my OS. I was running my 1600/9-9-9 at 1866/10-10-10 and was dumb enough to tick up the DRAM multiplier to 2133 without touching the timings... oops. redface.gif I had a black screen for a while, rebooted and fixed my RAM speed. After that I continued to get BSOD with STOP:0xC000021A in Windows 8. I will say, I like Win 8 but it seems to have terrible recovery performance. Of the 3 times now that I have corrupted my OS with hardware tweaks, only once was I able to do a restore and get back to where I was. I am thinking of doing full automated backups of my SSD on to my RAID1 every week now.

That's the thing about tweaking memory, the CPU does what it is told, if your memory is very unstable then who knows what instructions the CPU is executing after the fetch. I guess yours thought it fetched the self-destruct code. tongue.gif

Hey, I hope you can get another chip via RMA; but if it happened to me, I would have never thought this type of this would be covered under a warranty. thumb.gif

Win8 is such bs at recovering. I corrupted it once with no oc at all, then twice with unstable ocs.

Just say you treated it nicely when you do a rma tongue.gif

I was testing to see if a Biostar TA990FXE can handle 4 sticks of ram @ 2000. I had to oc the ram from 1600 to 2000. So I had my FSB @ 250, CPU around 4.5ghz, NB around 2400, HT around 2600 and ram @ 2000. It start to post and the Bios Post Code(LED CODE) display went blank. The mobo was not posting, so I switch out the my 8320 and put in a Phenom II 970. Hold and behold it booted. So my 8320 is dead Jim. I place an RMA with AMD and hoping for a another 8320.
Enjoy a good laugh on my guys and gals.

What were you running for voltages?

Only HT voltage was in auto.

My 6100 will go black in post if:
>memory faster than 1700
>volatge higher than 1.6
>fsb higher than 270, lower than 160

It just hard to believe that you can kill a chip by ocing the memory.

Edit: seemed like you already did that, im out of ideas.
I have tried it after I got it to post again and a no go.

Recently had a chip show up as being dead in one of my boards but it booted in another.

Hoping it's not the board playing tricks on you since not long after that, the board in question board began acting up. Still runs fine at or close to stock but gets cranky if I try to push things.

I've had one of those Biostar 990FX's die on me without warning already and the RMA/replacement board I have here is working OK but I won't be trying to push it, just gonna use it and that's it.
As for any real OC'ing, that's what my CHV & CHV-Z is for.

Guys, as a rule, never raise the HT more than the NB Freq.... Simple.

HA HA HA HA!!!
The HT is design to run at 2600. So that is not a rule of thumb on a FX, but it is on a Phenom II.
