Does the OP have his windows activation key? Maybe he could take his hdd out , go buy a new one from the store and install windows on it after he downloads a windows cd image or something?

He can't make out the key. He'd need a Dell OEM install image. I'm pretty sure Dell offers ONE for free for the lifetime of each machine, but that machine's way past EoL, and I don't know what their policy is on that, and I don't think linking to an image is straight with OCN, but I can't be sure (the main reason I offered Ubuntu to OP as a solution in my previous post)

He hasn't been back on. Given this, I think it's safe to assume that he's at least somewhat resolved his issue.

Did you use at least a 2GB flash drive? Did you follow all the steps in the Ubuntu USB install guide I linked you?

In light of what a disaster this thread has become, I'm going to lock this up.

Juggalo, if you need help with installing Linux, there's a Linux forum here on OCN. If you end up reading the product key and coming up with a copy of Windows XP disc, then there's a general Windows forum where people can help you with the install.

Has anyone explained to the OP that installing Linux/Ubuntu means that 1) he loses everything on his hard drive, and 2) that he no longer will have an installation of Windows on his machine anymore, and that therefore he's entering a whole new world in terms of operating his computer ... nothing will look the same as it did before, he'll have to learn a different operating system entirely, and one that's not nearly as simple as Windows? If they haven't, then ... I'm doing it now smile.gif

@OP: if you can get your PC actually booted up, you should be able to save your music. You just need a USB thumb drive or better yet a portable hard drive so that you can grab the files and save them there. I would also recommend going through the 'My Documents' folder in general and looking for any files you still want, and putting them on the USB drive.

If you really can't make out the product key sticker (try it w/a bright light and magnifying glass), then, unless you can come up with about $100 to buy Windows 7 or 8 disc ... then your only (legal) option is to go with a totally different, free Operating System like the aforementioned Linux.

If you CAN make out the product key, then you need to find yourself a Windows XP install disc. Since they're not easy to find for sale, you probably need to make yourself a new computer geek friend at school that can actually help you acquire one. I'm not sure if it has to be a 'Dell' branded install disc to use your key or not. For sure it needs to NOT be labeled a 'Volume License' copy ... those won't accept retail keys like the one that's on your computer case.

Good luck mate.
