Opinions/Suggestions for Computer alterations please

post #1 of 30

All opinions and thoughts are encouraged, appreciated, and welcomed!

Current Spec:
AMD FX-4100 no OC (~3.6)
Gigabyte GA-970A-D3, rev. 1.1, version F11
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series (2x8GB) 1866 model -- (F3-14900CL10D-16GBXL), but running at 1333.
AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB (ASUS HD7850-DC2-2GD5-V2)
650W PSU

CPUs:
Benchmark source: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.htm
*For this build I'm going to go with AMD over Intel, so please disregard the Intel products except for info purposes.*

Intel Core i7-3770K @ 3.50GHz:
-- 9,604
-- $306.88

]Intel Core i7-3770 @ 3.40GHz:
-- 9,478
-- $289.98

AMD FX-8350 Eight-Core:
-- 9,228
-- $193.79

Intel Core i7-2600 @ 3.40GHz:
-- 8,363
-- $301.48

AMD FX-8320 Eight-Core :
-- 8,256
-- $159.15
-- recommended by: {eXXon}

AMD FX-8150 Eight-Core:
-- 7,744
-- $159.99

AMD FX-4100 Quad-Core:
-- 4,051
-- $94.99

It is noteworthy that Amazon's prices for processors were better than Newegg's for each product.

There's no question that Intel's CPUs get better performance than AMDs, but they are really expensive. AMD seems to be a better bang-for-buck CPU.

Motherboards:
(I do desire at a minimum, mild overclocking capabilities).

- ASUS Corsair V Formula-Z $230

- ASUS Sabertooth $185

- ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 $140

- Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 $165
recommended by: {eXXon}
-Amazon has it for $145 without RAM

Power Source:
Looking for a PSU that can support all and the possibility of CrossFireX of my 7850 or 7900 series card in the future. Would assume ~800-1000W?
-- Capstone 750M $120 {eXXon}

Cases:
Suggestions requested. Space for size is not an issue, I would like a case that is well ventilated to keep things cool, while looks are nice that is secondary I guess.
-- Haf-X $190 {eXXon}
-- THOR V2 $120 {eXXon}

Cooling:
I have no experience with liquid cooling; however, am still open to all recommendations.
-- H80i $85 {eXXon}
-- H100i $110 {eXXon}

HDD/SSD:
-- Samsung 840 Pro $140 {eXXon}
-- Samsung 830 $85 Used
{eXXon}
-- Intel 520 $140 {eXXon}

Misc. (Wiring, heatsinks, small parts, etc.):
?

Mice
- Logitech G600 $54
- Logitech G700 $56
-

Thank you all for assistance and input!

Total Cost of Suggested Products (if multiple given, least expensive used)
-- {eXXon}: $715

PSU: 7970 consumes around 250w + 150w for the CPU + another 7970 in the future = 650w-700w max (when the CPU + GPUs are under full 100% load @ the same time which is rare unless folding).
So, the Capstone 750M is an amazing quality PSU for its price * is more than enough.
It can be found in this list:
http://www.overclock.net/t/183810/faq-recommended-power-supplies

Case: I have the Haf-X from Cooler master which is very good. You can also look at the Rosewill THOR V2 (it comes in black too).

SSD: Sammy 830 or 840pro, Intel 520 are my recommendations.

Cooling: you can take the safe route & get the H80i or H100i from Corsair. But if you don't want to overclock, stay with the stock fan/heatsink.

Go with the UD5 (gr8 mobo & comes with 8GB memory for free) & get the FX-8320 thumb.gif

mini-bump, I am returning my G.Skill Ripjaws X Series. I have consulted both sides -- Gigabyte, who after a few days has yet to open the ticket, and G.Skill who was unable to solve the issue. I was also told that the RAM is designed more for Intel motherboards than AMD, which I could tell, but it didn't seem pertinent with so many AMD users using it.

Regardless, please include suggestions of 2x8GB RAM that can be rated 1600-1866 on the motherboards mentioned.

As a side note, how difficult would it be to dismount the CPU from the my current motherboard and carry it to a new one? Would it be worth it? I don't know that I have quite enough money to pay for a case, psu, motherboard, cpu, and RAM. Although I could buy the Gigabyte mobo as eXXon suggested which comes with 1600 RAM, and I could just buy an additional stick of that. Has anyone OC that RAM to 1866, or have any experience with it in general, did it rate itself to 1600 as its supposed to with 2 sticks?

ram being designed for intel over amd or vise versa is plain BS. Its mainly a marketing thing. They both use the same ram.

yeah well I agree with you like I said. It was another user on here who posted that anyway...but I'm stuck with the RAM because I do not have the flimsy plastic "case" they were sold in. It ripped, broke, whatever, so I probably threw it out. More incentive to get a new motherboard. So again out of curiosity, would it be a bad idea to remove the CPU from my current mobo to transfer to a new one?
