You're more likely to be hit head on by a sleeping, inattentive, braindead, or drugged human being. Congratulations.

Self driving cars probably won't have steering wheels. With cars driven by people, you will at least have control which means if you see a sleeping, inattentive, braindead or drugged person heading towards you, you will at least be able to get out of the way.

However, a driverless car will have faster reaction times than any human and be able to logically calculate the best solution to getting out of the way with minimal risk.

Traffic signals? In the future, we won't need those.... or signage.

The car train concept actaully has already been tested by some Europeans. I think they were doing 100kph almost bumper to bumper.

Do you fly? If so, you already trust your life to a computer driver...

Negative. They'll still have steering wheels. It might be able to drive between locations but no way will it be able to park due to undefined and pretty much arbitrary parking so that part will be manual. Plus that will probably be the safety override.

Eventually, the safety overrides will be the computer overriding human decisions.

I think some high-end cars today already do this.

True, but not if someone serviced it themselves and somehow messed up the software. Besides I don't see fully self driving cars taking off too quickly. Most people don't like change so they wouldn't really think about buying a self driving car.

Self parking cars are already "old" tech, they have been available to the public for at least 5 years. Fair enough they were only available in $80K+ cars, but the 2011 Ford Focus ($20K) has had self parking as standard.

I'm pretty sure we can combine that tech with self driving car tech just fine.

Volvos and some Mercedes have been doing it for a long time (since 2006 for Volvo and 2008 for Mercedes I think)

I see driverless cars in the next 10 years easy.

I would pay $5K for one.... I commute 1hr to work each way. If I could just work while on the way to work, I could get a whole lot more done and leave early (or at least on time in my case).

Commuters across the country would have 5-10hrs more free a week.... 250-500 hrs a year.... that's HUGE.

Yeah.... it's like the Luddites who complained that the automobile would ruin horses.

What happens if the Google system malfunctions, and kills or seriously injures someone?

Is Google liable?

Volvos and some Mercedes have been doing it for a long time (since 2006 for Volvo and 2008 for Mercedes I think)

But GETTING to the parking spot and lining the car up to self park is impossible without references. A Google car can get you in the vicinity but there are far too many ambiguous parking spots for a computer to sense so there will need some manual driving to get the car near a parking spot. Self parking cars are more for parallel parking.
