What's the best option for me when it comes to an upgrade?

Thread Starter
I am tired of getting HyperSLI hack to work on my computer again, and if you don't know what that is it's a hack to get SLI to work on my mother board (since it has a certain chip on it). I was hoping to ask which CPU I should plan on upgrading to and if we could keep it on a bang-for-buck budget. I only do FPS and MMO gaming, and it really has been cut down to a minimal (4 hours a week, but that doesn't mean I don't want improved performance and the ability to use both my GTX 470s at once). I would be interested in video editing, but not too much (I rarely make videos of my gameplay and upload on a website to share with others).

tl;dr: look at my sig, I need an upgrade... AMD or Intel... Which CPU/Mobo if I'm on a budget and want to use both my GTX 470s in SLI (because I haven't done so in a good year and I'm tired of it).

I'd just go with an i5 3570k along with a GA-Z77X-D3H, great combo to be honest. You might need new memory along with that, it needs DDR3 memory.

I have a 7-8-7-24-2t 1600MHz DDR3 (advertised 1.65v) 2x2GB G.Skill Ripjaws (blue)
and 9-9-9-24 1600MHz DDR3 (advertised 1.5v) 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance (black)

Will these work?

that'll work, but your 7-8-7-24 will run at 9-9-9-24.

But when it comes to bang for buck and considering he's going to have to get a motherboard as well, there isn't much point going with AMD.

AMD are great when you don't need to change your motherboard, in this case he does and it's worthwhile going to intel.

Thanks for the feedback, and will I be able to run my memory in triple channel mode?

Furthermore, which Intel CPU should I aim for... and which motherboard (I'd like to overclock, and purchase better fans for my H100)?

Would like to keep it on a budget smile.gif The more cheap the better!

Triple channel was only used on the 1366 chipset, it didn't really provide any notable performance gains. You'll be running dual channel and you should be able to use your current memory.

Again for the motherboard and CPU, go with the i5 3570k or a second hand 2500k if you can get a good deal. I actually think the 2500k is on sale at bestbuy for $140.

The motherboard you should go with the GA-Z77X-D3H which is the best in it's price range, Don't go with the ASRock boards in this range since they use crappy VRM's
