Newbie Looking for advice (thread formerly called Crazy Overkill Setup) - Page 2

You want the pump to follow the reservoir and below it so that it never runs dry. As running your pump dry will burn it.
Personnally, I dont like pumps atached to the reservoir because it's harder to decouple the pump for noise. I like my pump hanging by it's two hoses so that it transmits no vibrations to the rest of the case. This makes for the quietest setup.

Cheers cheers.gif

I also have my pump hanging. It is also for the same reason, if I set it in a bay, or on the bottom of the case, I can hear it buzzing a little, hanging, it is silent.

@deafboy Yes, I do want to keep costs down, but I'd rather spend more and get exactly what I want than go with something that may not be what I want. I don't want to go immediately for the most expensive components if there is something cheaper of equal quality.

@pepe Is there another way to mount the pump that's still quiet? I don't feel comfortable having anything not attached and dangling free. Also, what is a "top"? Top mounted radiator?

Btw, this is the secondary reservoir I was thinking of getting as a fill/drain reservoir. Is this possible/practical?

Okay, I have the fans, radiator, cpu block, and reservoirs all picked out, but could not find the Koolance D5 Vario on frozencpu.com. Any other pumps that are quiet? I am looking into quiet mounting options. The other (and hopefully final) questions I have are regarding tubing. Is a larger diameter usually better? I am going to eventually add dual graphics cards to the loop down the road, so I want to avoid having to redo it later. Overkill for now without performance gain is fine for now if it means not having to redo fittings and tubing later. I'm going to be going with 7/16" ID 5/8" OD PrimoFlex tubing. That leads to my other question, fittings. Which is better? Barbed with clamps, or compression fittings? I think barbs will be easier for now.

@deafboy I now have more of a budget in mind. I'm looking at keeping it under $500. This is what I have so far:

Rad:
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/14857/ex-rad-333/Alphacool_NexXxoS_UT60_Full_Copper_Triple_120mm_Radiator.html

CPU Block:

Reservoir:
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/16813/ex-res-409/Swiftech_Maelstrom_5_14_Dual_Bay_Standalone_Reservoir_Maelstrom.html

Fans: (x3)

Sitting at around $300 $450 right now. Still need a pump, tubing, and fittings, though.

Found a pump. The Swiftech MCP-655-PWM.

I have read many of the stickies, but I am still not sure, and I would prefer to hear from the community regarding my setup and desires, and their experiences and knowledge of parts, rather than try to go off a generic article. Thank you guys for the help so far.

UPDATE: Forgot to mention I'll be adding four ram coolers later as well.

What do you guys think of that setup? I'm still a noob when it comes to water cooling, hence all the beginner questions. I'm going with Fluid XP+ Blood Red coolant. It has anti corrosion and algae protection. I'm assuming it's good coolant. Do I have to worry about crap on my block or in my pump?

I am assuming you are talking about pump tops. If you get a pump with the wrong barb size for your tubing or if the inlet and outlet are pointing the wrong way for you, you can get a pump top for that. Some reservours will also come as a pump top. Shmuch as this one:
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/8990/35xpumpresinstalled.jpg

Also, I get that a lot, ppl think something bad is going to happen if you leave your pump dangling. But plenty of ppl do it this way and nothing bad ever happens. If you dont like that you can always mount your pump with rubber washers or on a rubber pad to isolate it from the rest of the case.

I've come to realize that by question was confusing and rather stupid. Lol. I'm still learning. I have an entire system pretty much picked out now, including a silencing pump mount. I think I'm either going to have to pick up a new pump top, or right angle barbs to be able to mount the pump where I want to. I'm going with the Swiftech MCP-655-PWM, and going to defer pump speed control to the BIOS or a smart controller.

Is it practical to have a small secondary reservoir for purposes of filling the system easier?
