[Hexus] NVIDIA to make reference smartphone and tablet designs?

Quote:
Russian mobile technology site Mobile Review claims we will see reference smartphones and tablets designed by NVIDIA demonstrated by add-in-board (AIB) partners at Computex in June this year.

Source

Interesting if true. It suggests that chip companies are showing even more interest in the mobile market segment. I understand why, but I doubt that desktops are going any time soon. If small gets powerful, then big gets more powerful. Although, I don't have any reason to believe this article yet.

Considering this post has been around since 2010, this could just be completely made up, or we might not see it for a long time. There's also their "Shield" project to think about.

EDIT:
Guys. Please talk about the rumour rather than desktops... I'm not trying to 'mini-mod' but, yeah. I know I mentioned it but that's not what the thread is about.

Desktops ARE going away soon. They lose heaps of market share to laptops, phones and tabs on an alarmingly steep slope. Go to Staples and tell me how many desktops there are to choose from versus laptops. I can't sell desktops anymore. Literally nobody wants them. Been parting everything on Ebay.

Corky, No you didn't just say that without acknowledging the millions of Workers around the world sitting at a desk. In many cases those Corporate desktops that cannot be just as easily walked out the door are a "staple". wink.gif

I take notice only in the word, "Soon". My company has over 50,000 desktops total and they are going no where "Soon". All of our Registers are Workstation PC's. We have in excess of 10K of those as well. the laptop is a different discussion, and highly relevant to certain staff & Sales persons. However we have tons of people who have as I said a normal desktop, which in bulk are cheaper commodities than Laptops by and large.

Hm...all I know is that at some companies they're just giving their workers Lenovo Thinkpads and a docking station for work and/or at home.

And another "Desktops are going away soon" thread.

Soon, as in "Duke Nukem Forever" soon?

Sorry, I've been playing with PC's for over 30 years now. Seems like every 5-7 years during that time I've heard of the death of the desktop. I'm not saying it won't EVENTUALLY happen, it might very well happen one day. Of course, we might actually get the flying cars we've been promised for the past 50 years too. rolleyes.gif

IMO the desktop market is dying, and will be almost completely gone in a decade. Sure, places may still use them, but how many are buying new ones?

My company has already started the transition to laptops, and tablets are on the horizon.

Not sure how a NVIDIA-might-produce-smartphones-and-tablets thread went all the way to assuming that desktops are dead. But ok.

Nvidia is broadening its horizon. Just the way other companies are. Selling a new product doesn't do away with the old...

The desktop market is shrinking and speed down but it will not die. Not as long as overclockers and hardcore gamers exists and people who need desktops for work.

I would say many companies have no need or desire to pay for more expensive, less expandable, less options, harder and more costly to repair, laptops (and even tablets) for people who will be sitting at a desk 8 hours a day and have absolutely zero reason to be wandering around the office and need a computer.

Don't get me wrong, laptops and tablets are wonderful devices (I own one of each and have for decades ... well, not the tablet), but for the vast majority of office workers, they just aren't needed. For some, especially "road warriors", they are invaluable. God knows when I'm on the road at a customers site, I always have my laptop with me, but when I get back to the office, I use my much more powerful desktop.

I don't see the desktop disappearing for awhile, even if laptops become powerful enough. Possibly if laptops become more powerful as desktops, but I doubt that will happen due to power constraints of being on battery.

I think Vizio had a pretty good idea with their NVIDIA Android tablets at CES (dying for the Vizion 10" and 7". Hoping for expandable storage though).
