Opteron overclocking?

Thread Starter
I've overclocked "normal" Intel stuff, including a dual X5650 on a SR2. My first overclocking was done on a Z80 CP/M machine (seriously).
And I've done GPU's, and AMD AM2/3 stuff.

BUT - I'm no wizard at it. I need help.

I want to overclock some old Opteron CPU's:

1) ASUS Dual Opteron 4130 machine
2) SuperMicro Quad Opteron 8354 machine
3) No MOBO yet - Quad Opteron 6128 (need mobo advice)

Where is the best source for info about tweaking these puppies?

They will used for Folding At Home or other distributed computing.

Would rather run Ubuntu on them, but will load Windows if I have to.

Server motherboards, there are some options here but it is far more limited. Easiest bet might be finding the PLL IC on them and trying to software overclock I'm guessing. The memory can definitely be tweaked with software.

If you had time, you could probably add more CPU vcore to it with pin modding. I know its dated and doesn't seem to be working or maybe it was abandoned but.. http://www.ocinside.de/go_e.html?http://www.ocinside.de/html/workshop/am2pinmod/amd_socket_am2_pinmod.html.

Probably better ways of going about it but im too tired to think of anything better right now. Just didn't want to leave you hanging thumb.gif

I've read snippets about both software control of AMD chips, and some aftermarket BIOS flash. I know I can push AM3 chips with just software dynamically using their utility. I haven't tried the AMD tool yet since the machines are currently Linux.

But no particulars. Something was even mentioned that nVidia had a CPU tool? That seems odd.

the nvidia system software is old and not updated last I checked, which was about a year ago. The AMD stuff was good though tongue.gif
