Judgement day bitfenix prodigy build

Hello everyone,

I am about to pull the trigger on ordering the components for my new gaming build and I just want to be sure everything is compatible and would like some opinions. This is my first build so all advice is welcome.
My goal is to be the proud owner of beautiful, ultra-silent, own-build gaming pc so I hope this'll work out!

Some considerations:

-I have chosen to start out only with a 250GB ssd, and will add some more ssd storage when I need it and prices might have come down by then.

-A question: what would be a good way to power the fans in this build? The asus has two 4 pin fan headers labelled CPU_FAN and CPU_CHAS.
I will have 2 non pwm fans on the noctua cooler, one intake Noiseblocker M12-S1and one exhaust Noiseblocker M12-S1. These are also non PWM.
So I have 4 fans to connect and only 2 motherboard headers. How do I solve this? Suggestions on even better noise/performance fans and set-up are allways welcome.

-The 400W PSU seems underpowered for the components it is powering but I have been recommended this PSU by a OCN member named Lizard-Brain, awesome guy who gave me some good advice. He said that when a PSU goes below 15% load it becomes very inefficient and I want an eficient pc because that equals less heat=less noise. And I care for the environment.

With that in mind, have a look:

So what do you guys think?biggrin.gif

1. Compatibiliteit Intel LGA1366, LGA1156, LGA775 & AMD AM2, AM2+, AM3
Your CPU cooler may require a bracket to fir LGA1155
2. I would advise more than a budget 400w power supply for that build. At least 600w, and preferably 80+ rated or better for efficiency.

Hey thanks for the reply.

I think the description on the site is just outdated, but I think the mounting holes of 1156 and 1155 are the same anyway, will send them a message.

The 400W seems not powerful enough but it certainly is. And it is a quality brand. It is gold rated and has an effeciency of around 90%. All while being quiet. Check out this link: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5818/nvidia-geforce-gtx-670-review-feat-evga/4 It shows that a computer with an i7 3960X and a gtx 670 only uses about 317W while playing metro 2033. So I don't know why I would go higher in power. It helps the environment and my wallet,as well on the initial purchase price as the electrical bill. And I am thinking of using a gtx 660 anyway and upgrade every 2 years or so.

I wouldn't trust a 400w PSU honestly. Idle draws are going to be very different from heavy power draws and surges. The initial surge draw just from turning on the computer could strain the PSU. Always better to have more power on hand so you aren't taxing it. 600w would be your best bet. The article makes no mention of surge and peak draw, looks more like it is an average draw. As an example, appliances tend to have a massive initial draw when turned on usualy about double the operating draw. That is why so many people fry generators, they don't account for that initial kick. It's not as severe with computers and I haven't measured it myself but give yourself some extra power to be safe. All it takes is just a hair too little power available from the PSU and it could end up taking out everything with it, which will be more painfull to your wallet and esteem.

A member here on OCN lizard-brain has build a rig with the exact same PSU and gtx 670 and it did work fine so I kind of trust him. Especially now that I am going with a gtx 660. Thanks for the warnings though.
I just want to confirm that I have built that system with a i5-2500K @ 4.6 GHz and an EVGA GTX 670 SuperClocked 4 GB powered with that BeQuiet E9 400W. By the way Fortron (FSP) is the OEM of BeQuiet so forget about budget PSU.

I have been building and experimenting with PCs and components for over ten years now and ever since I heard people say "take the bigger PSU you won't regret it". Truth is back then a 400 W PSU was a good choice for an air cooled single GPU gaming rig and it is still a good choice today whereas a 600 W PSU has always been the choice of those who thought they might need it in the future. In the end you pay more when you purchase an oversized PSU that you won't fully utilize and you will also pay a little more for your electric bill because every time you surf the internet with an idle PC that only draws 60 W from the wall your 600 W PSU runs with a lower efficiency compared to a properly sized PSU like a 400 W unit.

Just my 3 Cents (2 Cents won't cut it anymore due to inflation).

Nearly exact the same build as mine. Except VGA cpu cooling and PSU. Have fun with it. Seems cool.

Edit: About the Psu's : I got this specific one because it will regulate its internal fan denpending on its load. If im just surfing the web it mostly shuts down the fan completely and works passive. When i start up a game the fan will start blowing again. Also being full mudular is really nice especially in the prodigy since u wont have alot of space to work with.

Not saying the 400w can't handle the hardware at all. Just saying me personally woulnd't trust it. I always prefer the "better safe than sorry" side of things and always get a PSU with a bit more power than I need while still getting one that is efficient.

Seems like a good build.

400W is a bit little IMO but it should do, i wouldnt overclock both the CPU and GPU on that though and run them both @ 100% load in some test or so.

The BeQuiet straight power E9 400W is a great PSU but i would rather pick this one:
http://azerty.nl/8-1073-449351/be-quiet-pure-power-bqt-l8-cm.html
(its even the same price as the 400W on that site lol)

The SSD is a little cheaper here and come's with a bracket and sata cable
http://azerty.nl/8-1990-527189/crucial-v4-with-easy-desktop-i.html

Btw, you can get a good HD7950 for less money then that GTX670.
I think the 7950 is slightly better if your going to overclock IMO.
http://azerty.nl/0-3921-536998/asus-hd7950-dc2t-3gd5-v2.html

For the same money as the GTX670 you can even get this !!:
http://azerty.nl/0-3921-482843/gigabyte-gvr797oc-3gd-grafis.html

BTW:
Any reason why you want/need an ITX build ?

If you need some help in Dutch just send me a PM.
I'm a Dutch reseller and know the market in Holland rather good.
