mSATA SSD install into MSI GE60 0ND-257US - info needed

Hello, this is my first laptop after building my own desktop machines for about 20 years... so far so good but I really want to put in an SSD boot drive as I have really gotten spoiled with boot times under two minutes.

I've done a little bit of searching around for info and haven't found much that is specific and directly applicable to the MSI G-series laptops, so if there's anyone here who has done something similar and can help me figure out if what I want to do is possible, I will be very grateful.

Basically I've boiled things down to two questions:

1) Will my model (GE60 0ND-257US) accept a 256GB msata ssd? I've seen a few references stating that it will only take a 128GB, and a few manufacturer/vendor sites which imply that the 256GB units they sell are compatible. Has anyone reading this actually done a 256GB upgrade to an MSI GE-60 series laptop?

2) Is it possible to transfer all the factory-installed recovery etc partitions from the HD directly onto the SSD, or will I have to nuke and start over with a fresh OS install? I'd prefer not to do that since it would mean buying a new OS copy... right?

Thanks for any help and insight.

1) Which mSATA SSD do plan on installing? is it one of these:

2) Yes. And even if you nuked it with a fresh install, you'll not have to pay for another OS. (there should be a sticker at the bottom of the laptop with the OS key).

Thanks for the response! I was definitely eyeballing the Crucial m4 as my mSATA SSD of choice, so it's nice to see Tom's supporting that.

Those are great links but unfortunately they don't specifically address the GE60 0ND or mirroring onto an mSATA drive. I have seen a lot of info that implies there is some kind of BIOS limit on the size of the drive supported in the mSATA slot on the GE60 0ND, but nothing definitive either way, so I was hoping someone here would have direct knowledge or first-hand experience regarding that.

It also appears I don't have a Win8 product key so it looks like a dedicated OEM install. frown.gif So will it be possible to clone the entire boot drive, which includes two recovery partitions and the EFI system partition, onto an mSATA SSD, and have it work?

I remember reading through that SSD guide previously when I installed one in my desktop, so I'll have to pore through it again to see if there's anything that might be different for using an mSATA device in a laptop that only has one mSATA port and one standard SATA port (two counting the optical bay but I don't want to buy extra drives and carriers that I'm not going to use).

I guess I'll try posting on the MSI user forums too...
