Seasonic X-1250 Noisy *Update - Seasonic admit X-1250 units may have "unstable fan control" *

My new Seasonic X-1250 arrived this morning and when I got home from work this evening I disconnected my old PSU and reconnected with the new beast.

I'm used to having a silent PSU, my Super Flower Golden King 550W never turned it's fan on other than in really hot and very high power draw situations. Example: I had two 18W pumps, two GTX680's overclocked and Folding and a 3770K at 4.6GHz Folding, four HDD, one SSD, a ton of fans, loads of LEDs ect. Even then the fan wasn't on all the time, it'd turn off after a while and cycle like that. Apart from that it was never on and hasn't been on in months.

I'm running one 680 at stock, a 3770K at 4.6GHz, two HDD, one SSD and two fans on an air cooler. Power consumption on my meter reads 107W as I'm writing. The unit is in "Hybrid" mode, the fan span up and turned off when I first powered the system up, after a minute it comes on and it's not loud but it's certainly not quiet either. I was expecting a unit that outputs over twice what my last one did to stay fanless for atleast aslong as the last one did. The fan came on and isn't going off, it's still in Hybrid mode.

It's around 16 - 18C in here. Drawing between 107 - 109W currently.

I noticed removing the grill helped alot, but that's no good.

The graph clearly shows it performing much better on the box.

Was I expecting too much?

It sounds like the temp sensor may be borked. I have an X650 and a Platinum 660 and neither run their fans at idle in hybrid mode. My Platinum actually stays fanless even while gaming, and my two Fermis are definitely drawing more power than your 680s.

Edit: BTW my ambient temps are 23-26c for comparison.

Yeah, I'm returning it. Think I'll pick up a Corsair AX1200i instead.

I have the X1050 which is based upon the same platform/design as yours and I don't hear it in either mode at that wattage seems like you got a defective unit.

I have a P860 with a 3770K / GTX690 / a single HDD and a few fans, and it only idles once in a blue moon. I suppose that isn't normal? frown.gif
Pretty loud fan, too, but still an improvement over the really annoying HX1000 I had...

Try flipping the hybrid switch a couple of times or leave it on the 'Normal' position for a couple of cycles then flip it back to hybrid.
As for a replacement in the same range (don't understand why you need such high wattage with your setup), might I suggest the MK-III Silencer 1200 for 249$. (will stay silent up to 600w load!)
Review

Since your current setup consumes less than 300w peak (680GTX+3770k @ 100% load), you can easily get away with the Capstone 450M.
Or go for the logical choice, the Capstone 750M which supports up to two 7970s if needed in the future.

ppc is so 1999

why would he not just keep the seasonic? just RMA it and get a new one?

Tried playing with the switch ect, it doesn't help.

I'm very aware of what my machine draws. I'll be building a proper beast in the summer with some sponsors so it doesn't hurt to have a decent PSU.

My current 550W beats the crap out of that Capstone unit anyways.

It's certainly not normal to me. RMA that thing or send it back, noisy PSUs like this suck.

The AX1200i is a Flextronic built unit and I've seen it run upto 500W fanless.

You can only RMA to Seasonic in the US and Canada. In the UK you return to the retailer and I bought it from a friend who was given it by Seasonic so no warranty.
