2400mhz RAM wont run at speed

Thread Starter
I just build my new rig and an having issues with the RAM. I have the G Skill (2x8gb) 2400mhz 10-12-12-31 1.65v. All my bios setting are stock, I go into the bios and change the ram settings to 2400 and the voltage from auto to 1.65. Computer wont even post. So I change the ram speed down to 2200mhz everything works fine.... frown.gif any ideas?

Might need to increase your memory controller volts too. What's your VVT at?

Are you using the correct sub-timings? The one's the XMP profile would apply?

That high speed of RAM can sometimes be tricky with your processor (those memory controllers were never designed for that kind of speed). Increasing the VTT / QPI voltages might help, that affects the memory controller. Also, does your bios have an option to load memory XMP settings? If not, you may need to set the timings by hand in addition to the speed and DRAM voltage.

VTT is set to auto (1.076), I have tried the timings on auto, I have tried the xmp profile which is 10-12-12-31, and i have tried manually setting those timings.

So VTT and QPI are the voltages that affect the memory controller?

sorry for the noob questions, I'm coming from a q8400, and many of the terms have changed

Yes, might have to increase the volts on the memory controller. Might require a little more than 1.65v too.

Yep I agree, might need to increase the VTT then. And to clarify, he meant a little more than 1.65v on the dram voltage. That is safe for the older cpu's, although I would never try more than 1.65v ram on sandybridge/ ivybridge.

Ok I have tried

DRAM Voltage 1.70v
VTT Voltage 1.113v
VCCSA Voltage 1.107v

Timing are set to stock values, I have also tried a command rate (CR) of 1 and 2

System still will not post.
You can take the VTT higher, try 1.2V. Going for 2400MHz with your setup is quite a stretch, but it has got to be possible thumb.gif

Honestly, the RAM may just not perform as advertised (I have bought RAM advertised as 2133MHz but wouldn't run correctly above 1866MHz). I might consider RMA on the ram and see if you have better luck with a different set.

Perhaps post in the memory forum; might get more views and thoughts there.
