The first few posts nailed it Spec Ops: The Line and Dark Souls are two of the darker truly quality games at the moment. Spec Ops is basically Apocalypse Now re-re-redux and Dark Souls is... a unique beast that lords over Skyrim. Between Spec Ops and Dark Souls, Dark Souls definitely has the higher replay value, with an average first play-through lasting between 40-80 hours depending on how thorough you are, and if you run into much trouble with the difficulty curve. I would give Dark Souls (with the dsfix community patch) my highest recommendation just in general, but especially to someone looking for a very dark fantasy world that asks you to figure out the lore rather than spoon-feeding it to you like a child. It's one of the only games that I've played in the last 5 years that truly lived up to and then exceeded its reputation. With Dark Souls 2 on the horizon, this would be a good time to get the first game under your belt.

Didn't read all the recommendations but if it hasn't already been recommended, I suggest Alan Wake.

May not be quite what you're looking for but it is dark and definitely gloomy.

Fun too.... biggrin.gif

It's older but the Minerva mods for HL2 were stellar and had a really dark tone to them.....

I did enjoy Metro 2033, but that has already been mentioned.

Has The Walking Dead been mentioned?
The very beginning of it starts off as little more than a decent TV show tie-in. By the end, there are plenty of people who say they much, MUCH prefer it to either the TV show or the comics. Heck, it won 70+ Game of the Year awards, and every reviewer will admit its "gameplay" is lackluster and just fills in the blanks. I think that says something about its story.

I think part of its goal was at times to depict gore and death as something that you really CANNOT see as "cool" the way you would in many shooters. Many of the things the game needs you to do...are just not fun. It may be only asking you to press the A button with no time penalty...but it still becomes a moment of emotional trauma.

LIMBO was pretty dark and surreal. Not your typical game but pretty neat.

I think Heavy Rain falls into this category but that is a PS3 game. Silent Hill too!

- S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series
- Amnesia: The Dark Descent
- Penumbra series (not disturbing like Amnesia, but equally if not more brilliant)
- Anna (one of the most disturbing games)
- Underhell (Source mod that requires Source SDK 2006 and HL2)
- Cry of Fear (HL1 mod, also one of the most disturbing games/mods I've played... feels like a game, very long)
- Mistake (HL1 mod)
- Mistake-1 (HL1 mod)
- Grey (Source mod that requires Source SDK '07 and probably a game on that engine, like HL2 E2)

And if you aren't against emulators, I recommend the Silent Hill series (up to 3 or 4).

Manhunt 1

2nd was ok but 1 has a much better storyline, One of my favorite games ever tbh as it has a dirty feeling to it

Also kane and lynch 1 and 2, is great too.
