I have a few questions , What should I expect , watch out for , etc.
Looking to upgrade mobo / cpu / ram in a few weeks and initially wanted the FX-4300 due to the "updated" stock heat sink / fan. But as many have pointed out , the 6300 is the best AMD bang for the buck right now for only $10 more.
Would the stock hs+fan be adequate for a mild o/c , say around 3.8 to 4.0 ghz? I have a Cooler Master Elite 430 case with 6 120mm fans so case airflow is pretty good. If not , does anyone know if the hyper 212 evo will fit in my case with a GA990FX-UD3?
I know my p / s should be fine with the new parts and a Diamond Radeon 6770. Should I be concerned with the bios being up to date on the mobo out of the box so I don't have to get an AM3 cpu to flash the bios?
Obviously I will see a pretty good improvement over the Phenom 9500 , how much should I expect? 10% , 15% improvement in performance , or is my guess even close.
I know Intel has better performance and better power consumption with a little cost increase vs the FX lineup. So please let us spare ourselves another thread with that argument , I already know. I'm interested in comparing my current setup vs proposed upgrades.
It is a personal preference I have stuck by since my first pc with a K6-2 500.
Thanks for any tips , suggestions related to my post.
Stock clock on a FX 6300 is 3.5MHz with Turbo to 4.1MHz. So the 3.8 to 4.0 OC you said is within the clock speed. The FX chips can and do run a bit warmer than others so you will likely want to get a better cooler either air or an all in one water cooler.
Thanks for the info! I figured overclocking would be better with the turbo core disabled. But considering this will be my first new cpu since feb 2008 , I have some catching up to do.
It is a fairly massive upgrade coming from a phenom 1 to an fx series I should know as I came from phenom 8400 to a fx 8120 and I couldn't be happier with the improvement in performance. Everything is smoother and faster you will enjoy it and of course the overclocking will be fun too.

Thanks for the reply! I figured it would make a big difference given the distance between the two chips and chipsets , but was unsure. It's hard to compare the two because it seems the majority of people are going from Phenom II to Bulldozer. The benchmarks tell a promising story between them , but real world experience is more my cup of tea!

Hyper 212 evo will fit perfectly on your Elite 430 case with about 1.75 cm space between the side panel.
I have a hyper212 on mine and it still fits even with oversized 140mm fans.
As for what to expect in performance, it will be huge.
Even my old Athlon X3 wiped the floor with my first gen Phenom X3 8450
Yep it fits with little to spare. Have not posted in a while , been busy playing on the new machine! I left the CPU stock for about a month. Just did some overclocking/ benchmarking today. I have it at 4.821 ghz at 1.428 volts. With the cpu at 4.821 ghz it sits at 19 c idle and has maxed out at 47 c during cpu benchmark. All stock settings I have seen 7 c at idle and usual 35-40 c when gaming or multitasking.
Disabled cool and quiet , turbo core , all power saving states , added +.150 cpu voltage and 24 multiplier , did absolutely nothing else.
This thing is a blast to run!!! Have not found a game yet that will not hit 45fps at max settings with a Diamond 6770 HD. Thanks for all the input , you guys helped out a lot!!!!!
