CrossFIreX between 2 GPU's - one on 16x lane, other on 4x lane - potential problems?

Thread Starter
I'm halfheartedly looking at doing a CrossFire setup between two HD 7850's, but my mobo has a AMD 970 series northbridge, which only supports one PCIe 2.0 16x lane and another 4x lane (even though both are given 16x physical slots).

I guessing this could lead to problems, but I was wondering If I could somehow pull it off.

Comments/suggestions?

Will work. MIght be some more microstutter, although I have nothing to back this theory up.

it'll work fine, ideally you'd wanna run 2 16x slots as it'll give a slightly better performance but im talking tops a 4-5% increase in FPS. So can be done but wont be giving you 100% of the performance. If your looking to upgrade and x-fire can i suggest a better mobo first?

I'm pretty sure it's a bad idea. I've seen posts which people blamed 16x/4x motherboards for significant microstutter and performance problems. You should probably stick with a single more powerful card.

yeah, If i'm not getting at least a 50% boost, I'm not buying another 7850. plus, I've gotta say, just the one is surprisingly powerful.

I've heard microstuttering cited as a problem with bad crossfire setups, and I want to avoid it If I can. I guess the other option is to OC the one I've got. wonder where I would go to find out about doing that . . .wink.gif

^^micro stutter is a problem with most x-fire setups some more noticeable than others. I always prefer one single powerful card over 2, whilst radeon make great cards the driver support for x-fire is average at best...particularly when new games are launched with drivers taking sometimes weeks or months to be rectified...
the 7850 is a great card but if your looking for better performance sell off your 7850 and grab a 7950 or 7970 if prices are looking good in your area. i just picked upa 7970 in replacement for my x-fire 6970's in anticipation for crysis 3 biggrin.gifthumb.gif
