Doesn't say... it's a proprietary interconnect in a 5-D torus (a network mesh with end-nodes that wrap-around) configuration.

It's probably not just one single backbone but a hierarchy.

This probably a major reason they went with IBM. IBM has built supercomputers themselves. Intel is only recently trying to improve their interconnect technology. AMD bought SeaMicro only recently so they have not developed their fabric enough yet.

Like Duckie has been saying this whole time, what makes this system interesting and (more) super expensive is that all those cores are working together. Folding at home runs fine on hundreds of systems that aren't connected, so using this to fold would be invalidating the main reason why it's so powerful.

Nope, completely pointless.

The hardest part about a supercomputer is trying to get all the hardware to work together into a homogeneous system. It's not trivial. Basically, you are calculating the impact of L1, L2, L3, RAM, SAN, NAS, LAN, etc. You are attempting to make operates at the nanosecond domain work even if forced into the millisecond domain. Then you have to explain the design and ensure the software is optimize for the architecture. It's REALLY hard.... they did all that work here. It would be an utter waste of time to Fold on it.

We are talking about HPC here... everything has to be optimized. This isn't just some trivially parallel project.

If anyone visited and read the link in the OP, they spent all this time and money to build a supercomputer to... find a way to make jet engines quieter.

Somehow, curing cancer with spare clock cycles seems like a better use for technology.

But the premise is not lost on you, I am sure.

In any event, if they're going to turn a supercomputer over to solving the problems of commercial airlines, maybe they should work on scheduling and logistics, so we don't end up with planes circling over Heathrow for 55 hours a day smile.gif Once they solve that, then sure, quiet those engines down some.
