[CVG] Dead Space 3 producer defends console-to-PC port - Page 4

Why would he care is console and PC users have the same experience, its not like there is cross platform multiplayer or anything. The fact is most PC gamers prefer PC because they like the experience of better graphics and more customization that a PC provides and this guy just crapped all over that. I wish I had this guy's facebook or twitter because I would troll the hell out of it.

What part of that quote actually fits in with his actual previous point? Its the part at the very end. The part about making the game feel different.

The actual message he wanted to convey was how different control schemes can alter the game feel, but the way it was shown before gave the impression that all he was trying to say is that people should be happy they're being allowed to use a mouse and keyboard.

What he wants to say and what he says are two entirely different things. If you cannot see that then you missed a valuable lesson in english class, if you took that.

That sentence is INCREDIBLY condescending. Yes I know I probably messed up that spelling, not my forte. Always choose words carefully when publicly speaking, as one wrong word can make a huge impact.

PC Gamers: "No DX11 support? RAGE!"

Developer: "What are they upset about? They can still use their mice and keyboards."

I guess that makes sense. I think it's still safe to say he could have stated some things differently, to avoid this from becoming a total PR nightmare. He would've been better off just comparing the port to the DS2 port, in my opinion. It would've probably saved him a lot of explaining.

On another not, I know PC isn't priority for a lot of devs, especially for big triple-A releases, but none of this should be big news.

Of course it seems that way, when you refuse to surround it in the rest of the context providing things he said.

It's by no means any less important to us; it gets a lot of attention. The PC is a very different platform. As developers, you want to deliver an experience that's as similar as possible on different platforms.

In Dead Space 2, I felt we made some great strides in terms of controls, responsiveness and even the visual improvements we got into it. We continue to evolve our games as we develop them, but we certainly don't target PC as something that's going to be significantly different. We aren't trying to create disparity in the experience that our gamers enjoy; we want to make sure everyone's having that same experience.

At our studio, we've always made console games. The biggest thing is we want to make sure the quality of the experience is consistent across all platforms so we don't have one userbase saying it's better on their system.

The fact that we're allowing you to control the game with a mouse and keyboard immediately makes the game feel different.

Working with the community, we found some people wanted to map the controls a little differently because of disabilities and we supported that [in Dead Space 2]. It's a confusing question and I hope my answer brings a little bit of light to it. We seem a little bit discredited for the amount of effort that goes into it, quite honestly.

We want it to be great on all systems, that's our approach.

Its obvious to anybody who wants to see it what his REAL point was, and that the only reason he referenced mouse and keyboard was to explain how it makes the game feel different. Sure it could have been worded in a way which doesn't create such easy ad-click money out of a sub set of gamers who love pitch forks, but his real reason for saying what he said is obvious.

If you want to take it that he only said it because he believes you should just be happy you're getting mouse and keyboard, fine.

This whole thing just sounds like a poor choice of that single word to me, and really I don't even think its that poor. I know I've done it before. I probably wouldn't have even noticed it if the OP didn't highlight it for me.

I'm just as confused as he is about all this crap tbh.

The last two games were ports......where were the headlines? Did something special happen why number 3 all of a sudden can't be a successful port? Was there a prophecy where the third Dead Space game would end the world if it was a port?

And yes, playing with a mouse gives a different feel to playing with a controller....that's obvious....but when people are pitchforking out of nowhere due to headlines that suddenly matter to people it didn't matter to previously, maybe sometimes you have to explain things you thought were quite obvious?

Edit:
Would also be helpful if the OP was formatted properly without the obvious context warping suggestiveness........or the made up article title.......so that it doesn't look like the guy is boasting about allowing people to use a mouse and keyboard, when he's just elaborating on how using them gives a different feel that needs to be balanced.

As PC gamers we are getting sick and tired of ports that run like crap, and require community mods, hex editing, or other community generated fixes to make them run even half right.

People wonder why Valve and a handful of other companies are doing so well in the PC segment. Well, it is a secret, they simply take the time to properly develop a game for the PC, period. You can get away with 30 FPS at 720P on a console, but the moment you port that crap to PC, we are going to notice. We might give a Developer/Publisher a free pass once or twice, but after that they are done. If you want our money then work for it, don't just do a hack and slash job on your product and squeeze it into PC.

It wasn't poor choice, he knew exactly what he was saying when he said it. Developers are getting fat heads and are starting to believe they control the market and they are doing us a favor by making a product. I completely blame this on the Modern Warfare Syndrome, where a Developer can rehash the same crap year after year and people just line up to choke it down.

Gamers today have made it too easy on Developers and simply don't hold them to the same standards as we once had to. Because of digital delivery these studios can put out crap, take our money, and worry about patching later. That was much much much more difficult 10 years ago, back when they had to get it right or face the wrath of the gamers.

Is this why no HL3?

But honestly, talk about context all you want, but the "fact we're allowing you to..." for a control scheme (KB+M) just smacks of callousness on his part. Getting a near direct port with relatively few changes is something of par course for console focused franchises (*ahem Dark Souls *ahem Ace Combat, at least 60fps + Vsync amirite?), but by highlighting said sore topic is going to do nothing but spark more arguments, especially when PC gamers get franchises like Borderlands and BF3 (or Doom 3 from way yonder) to hang over their heads in terms of shooters.
