Set up secure remote desktop connection for Nexus 7?

Hi, I was wondering how one would go about setting up a secure RDP to remotely login to my desktop computer from my Android (Nexus 7) tablet? I have investigated a few applications such as Splashtop 2, but that really doesn't help because it only works on the same network unless you pay a monthly/yearly fee.

I want to setup a regular RDP then, but I want to make sure I do it right; as to not expose myself to malicious software by allowing ports to the web etc.

I'm sure there are some security networking guru's out there who know how to correctly setup a good RDP (that can be accessed from an Android tablet?)

Should be fine aslong as you don't port forward more than what you need port wise.
Also they have stuff like Teamviewer as an option or just setup a VPN then RDP into the LAN.

Thanks for the reply, I tried out Teamviewer, and let me just say that, Teamviewer is one amazing program! I highly recommend it to anyone. One problem/feature I wish it had was sound support but that is a minor issue.
