A10 5800K northbridge ?

Thread Starter
hi all so after putting together a small gaming build together for casual gaming and so on i am very impressed with the power of my system ( a10 5800k - asrock fm2a85x extreme 4 m - geil corsa evo 1866 - ) and have started to overclock to unleash some extra performance but being a amd noob ( Intel for 5 years ) i have come up against something i have no knowledge on and would appreciate some help. i have a stable 4.4ghz overclock on the cpu using multi only my ram is at 1866mhz and gpu running 950mhz and all is fine but i have come across the northbridge and see that it is running a x8 multi @ 1600mhz . as far as i know amd systems benefit from a faster nb but how do i go about overclocking this and how will it affect my performance ? also will changing the nb multi affect any other settings ?

any help will be very much appreciated

I don't know specifically about trinity but for AMD chips RAM performance improves drastically when overclocking the northbridge, which should help to feed the integrated GPU.
Quote:
it is running a x8 multi @ 1600mhz

That's odd I would think that with a multiplier of 8 and a FSB of 100, the frequency would be 800mhz, either way adjusting the northbridge multi will only affect NB frequency.

Hi again,
as i tried to explain in last thread APUs have slightly different NB they call it UNB unified northbridge. It consist from CNB(cpu NB) and GNB(gpu NB) and IMC is also integrated in what is called unified NB, UNB.
Here is a pic

also

As u can see this isnt classic NB which is controller with its own multiplier that connects just CPU with RAM via FSB.

So to get higher UNB freq u can raise u re APU/PCIE Frequency, NB multi and also raising u re RAM multi as u re NB multi is limited by RAM multi however NB multi cant go higher than 9 because trinity supports officially only 1866 memory (9.33 multi).

Heres a pic of guy running nb at 2300MHz that i could find
Notice hes ram running at 1200MHz (2400ddr3)
http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/2015/tncbairbonanox.png

Heres a 2050MHz NB with 1125MHz ram(2250ddr3)
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/6469/trinyra.jpg

So fastest RAM multi, fastest NB multi will give u max NB speed. Ofc raising APU/PCIE Frequency raises RAM and NB without touching multipliers.

Hope it helps u.

EDIT: specifically in u re case with your memory at 1866, and u re NB multi is at 9. Only way to up u re NB is by raising APU/PCIE Frequency. Ofc slowly and test stability.

Zvrk22 thanks again for your response you have helped me no end with my first amd system and I am very appreciative. So basically your nb cannot be higher than your ram speeds on a amd apu is this correct ? So in my case with my 1866 ram I am limited to a x9 multi with 1800mhz nb ?

Hi,
im glad if iwas helpful. U can, as i said, raise u re bus speed. That will increase everything including NB.
If u think about it it isnt that much different from normal NB u have NB multi or fsb. But yes for some reason if u had 1600 memory u wouldnt even have 9 multi for NB but 8 or for 1333 RAM u re NB multi would be 6.66 no higher.

but it still goes 9x u re bus speed(should be called in u re bios "APU/PCIE Frequency")

If u can increase APU/PCIE Frequency u re NB will go higher and u will see some performance increase. If u decide to do it post some CPU-z memory tab pictures here as u increase "APU/PCIE Frequency" so we can see how NB increases with it.

Just an example i have 1600 ddr3 memory and my NB multi is only 8 so if i could have 9 like u do i d be happy smile.gif
Try to up APU/PCIE Frequency see if it works.
Good luck.

with my bulldozer increasing the northbridge didn't do jack for me as far as performance. Ram frequency, clock frequency, and the igpu are your best bets i think. That's what the bulldozer/piledriver Architecture seem to love.
