.... You can still have a recovery disk on a seperate flash drive. It would have cost MS very little. There actually are viable alternatives besides the user doing it themselves.

Maybe I'm just looking at this from a marketing/ease of use perspective. I couldn't care less personally since I don't intend to purchase a surface at this point and I'd have no problem removing the recovery and other stuff on my own. I just think this is actually something valid that will really hamper the surface, specifically the 64gb version.

My "standard" windows 7 SP1 install is 11.5GB but it isn't a drop the DVD in and install, it has a few added apps and updates, I install it using a jump drive. I didn't think windows 8 pro was much more? I have only installed it 2 times and didn't pay that close to the install size.

Somehow I find that very hard to believe. My Windows 8 Pro (64-bit) install is 19GB, and of course the WinSXS folder is like 9GB alone, but that can't be helped.

Windows 8 Pro 64bit bare install was 8GB for me.
That recovery partition will be removed by most power user's anyway or undergo a full clean install of 8.

Well it depends really.

The surface is one of two types of convertibles for Windows 8:

-There are the tablet first computers that can suffice as a laptop when needed.

-Then there are the laptop first computers that can be used as a tablet when needed.

The surface is a tablet.

People familiar with tablets, are more than familiar with low capacity to the tune of 8GB/16GB/32GB capacities. None of which provide the full quoted figures in any case.

The people who care enough to know the difference between the 64GB and 128GB versions will obviously be those who need higher capacities and will go for that model.

Those who don't store a lot of things on their computers, who use a lot of cloud storage, who can get by with only a MS Office suite and the ability to access YouTube and other content streaming services (a large amount of the older end of tech users) will do fine even with 23GB free.

They need to get it right, and no matter how you see it this will be seen as a misstep by consumers (whether they are grandpa or a business user). There were other, cheap and feasible options that would have endeared Microsoft to the consumer and showed people they understand how this all works.
Please enlighten us to who the target demographic is. Is it the techie niche group that isn't gonna buy enough units to even justify MS making a Pro surface?
You hit the nail right on the head.

You hit the nail right on the head. That is EXACTLY who they are targeting. It WILL be a niche group looking to buy the Surface Pro, and if, IF it takes off any more than that, that's just going to be icing on the cake for Microsoft. They certainly aren't competing with iPad users, but aren't directly competing with the Ultrabook crowd either. This is kind of new territory they're forging with the Surface Pro.

Mine is 30GB with everything optimized.

The bare minimum recommended is 20GB.

I haven no idea where this 64-bit 8GB install comes from. WinSxS folder is taking up that much alone.

Anyone who says Windows 7 professional x64 only requires 8GB is lying. Windows x64 has both 32 bit and 64 bit binaries for compatibility and generally takes up 15-30GB, 8GB isn't true. Windows 7 32 bit has a smaller footprint, 64 has both 32 bit and 64 bit included for compatibility and takes a TON of drive space. My fresh installs are easily nearly 35GB.

This entire topic is retarded. The reason for the large footprint is because it is a full form PC with a 64 bit OS *AND* it has a recovery partition on the SSD. The intention there is for the consumer to apply that (recovery partition) to USB media and delete it.

Also, this is from the verge. Pretty sure they are paid by Apple, their reviews of windows devices are downright hilariously biased.

For your first point, unfortunately, it's not just this topic. It's completely widespread because people aren't comprehending the fact that it's a tablet/Ultrabook hybrid. Shame, really.

For your second point...couldn't agree more. If you've ever watched video reviews from The Verge, they are absolutely, completely biased that it's BEYOND hilarious.

Yup. The average consumer that doesn't know how to use a PC probably applies sweeping generalizations based on form factor alone, which is pretty sad. A 128GB ipad will still be a dumb media consumption tablet, I have one and while it is a good device for having fun and reading email on the go, it still isn't windows 7/8 x64. iOS is extremely limited in what it can do; I can get much more work done in a windows environment, x86 compatibility is much more versatile.

And on that note, guess what. The 32GB iPad doesn't have 32GB of space free. My iphone5 doesn't have 16GB free. Big shocker there rolleyes.gif

The fact that the surface pro has quite a bit of HDD space used shouldn't be surprising, this is just a fact of life with all ultrabooks and macbooks. You can't apply sweeping generalizations based solely on the form factor, the fact of the matter is a 64 bit operating system takes a lot of space - and the surface pro has both the OS, applications, *and* a recovery partition included.

But Microsoft is obviously doing it wrong, cause what if joe schmo-average businessman buys a Surface Pro expecting it to be an iPad-like device?!?! What then when they find out they're NOT getting 128 GB (or even 115 GB) of useable storage space cause it's NOT iOS and instead is a full-blown 64-bit Windows 8 install?! Oh, the humanity! tongue.gifthumb.gif
