[Verge] Microsoft's 64GB Surface Pro will only have 23GB usable storage - Page 7

Nothing to see here.

Shame it amounts to such a large amount of data in the end but that's the whole point of the surface tablet. A fully functioning Windows OS in a tablet. If you wanted a tiny and limited OS like iOS then you'd buy a iPad not a surface.

Im going to buy one and 64GB total will be fine.

As a counterpoint, Linux Mint is a full OS with more bundled software than Windows has by default and it only weighs in at 1-1.5GB of space.

Don't be jealous that they've found a way to do it better. I still find charging $200 for an OS, then charging another couple hundred for an office program to be more of a rip-off, but maybe that's just me.

And sorry, but I still find Apple better than this. At least when you buy a 64GB iPad you don't lose 2/3 of that storage to the OS.

And I find charging $800(!) for a 128GB slate that can't replace your laptop is criminal and a rip off. At least Microsoft gives you functionality with no loss in longevity and portability. In order to make the iPad do what the Surface RT does, you need to double the weight and double the thickness with 3rd party peripherals that still lack expandable storage options, which wholly defeats the purpose of such a thin & light device.

Your comparison would make a lot more sense if we were comparing an OSX slate with a Windows 8 slate, but in this case, one is infinitely more functional than the other.

Equipping the Surface with 10Gb worth ROM chips in addition to the 64-128GB flash chips would have increased cost and complexity, especially given that those for who this is targeted will most likely delete the partition and use the extra storage space for personal files. It was you that just said companies gotta' make money, but in your sordid mind it doesn't apply to Microsoft.

yep, win8 tweaked takes <10gb like 8.5gb

format c:/q
format all the crap on the tablet, tweak your OS

every device is like these, the same as nexus7 8gb (5 gb for use)

worse is my WD 1tb, has like 920gb

And when did 128GB come into play? But if you want to go there, as it is the 64GB iPad is $700, so if people are willing to pay for that, then an extra $100 to double the space is really not that big of a deal, and only lose 3? 4? GB on their 64GB model after OS and file system. Not like Microsoft that market a 64GB device and give you 1/3 of that space as usable.

Not once did I ever mention functionality of either device, there goes that Apple hate you so blatantly display in every thread. My comparison was that of file system size.

I won't bother arguing with the rest of your Windows fanboism.

Equipping the Surface with a 10-20GB internal SSD, or even an internal SD card would not take much at all. And honestly wouldn't increase the cost at all. For them, it wouldn't cost them close to nothing to do so, yes! let's increase the cost of production by... $0.50! woohoo, oh and we can charge an extra $50 to the customer. Yeah... that option doesn't make them more money at all. They might as well market the device as a 23GB device and not a 64GB device, as you said only those with technical knowledge will know how to delete the partition and get some space back.

Note, there are 2 Surfaces in this household. And I have said plenty of times that it is a fine tablet. This is my view on that said tablet, it is no more wrong than your own view.

Eh, not a big deal really. Unlike with the iPad you can add unlimited storage to a Surface via USB thumb drives...
lol at the Windows defenders...

my 64GB ssd after the install of the 64 bits OS and all my programs, including adobe master collection...32GB left

this 23GB nonsense is just a slap in the face

Yeah... I already did all that when I first installed Windows 8 and it's still 19GB.
