Alright everyone, I built my sig rig "HAF blood beast" a little over a year ago but I've been wanting so turn it into a "FULL blood beast". So I've been saving some money on the side and I think I'm about ready to upgrade to something on the RED side with more power than my little green 560 Ti at max clocks. redface.gif Questions below!

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
So my question is:
1. Should I wait for the un-announced HD 8xxx series that are rumored to launch between March-April?

Or

2. Should I pull the trigger now on a HD 7xxx series card considering the price/performance on them is through the roof and AMD has really kicked it into gear with their drivers!

If I did go with #2 I've narrowed it down to these two cards, and I don't know which I should choose.

MSI R7970 Lightning: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127670

Or

Sapphire Vapor-X 7970 GHz Edition: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202001

If you have any suggestions OR are an owner of either of these two cards please post and give me your thoughts!
(P.S. - I will be overclocking each card to its full potential on air) devil.gif

Thanks for your time everyone! biggrin.gif

For the best price perf get a HD 7950 boost. at the same clocks HD 7970 is 3 - 6% faster than HD 7950. the sapphire HD 7950 boost for USD 300 (280 after rebate) is a very good card. excellent cooler. 925 mhz boost. overclocks easily to 1100 - 1150 mhz and matches HD 7970 Ghz performance.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202006

If you want to go for HD 7970 Ghz the sapphire HD 7970 Ghz vapor-x and HIS HD 7970 iceq x2 Ghz are good options. better price perf than MSI HD 7970 Lightning.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202001

The HIS HD 7970 iceq X2 Ghz edition with model no H797QMC3G2M has a reference AMD PCB design and has voltage control. dual 8 pin power connectors. the HIS HD card has 6+1+1 power phases compared to 5+1+1 on reference AMD HD 7970. the increased power phases with dual 8 pin power will mean lower temps and better stability at extreme overclocks.

you can see the card here

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/59265-his-hd-7970-iceq-x-hd-7950-iceq-x-review-14.html

about the sapphire HD 7970 Ghz vapor-x you can ask this user. seems to have unlocked voltage. but the vapor-x cooler gets loud after 50% fan speed.

2nd ^

I bought a Gigabyte 7870 OC in December and I believe it is the best sub $300 card you can buy. It OC'ed very easy and the performace was great.

But I only had it a week when a co-worker bought himself an MSI 7950. Of course I had to upgrade. So I upped him with a pair of Gigabyte 7950's. Both my cards came out of the box with the FZ bios and are clocked at 1Ghz, even though the box says 900Mhz.

The 3 fan model is also inaudible at normal computing and remains pretty quiet even under gaming load.

Heaven 3.0 1680x1050 maxxed settings ~35-40FPS single, 90+ crossfire

Even with only one card I run all games at ultra and stay above 30FPS. BF3, MOHW, Farcry3. The new 12.11 or 13.1 drivers really made things fly.

The 7950 is a lot less expensive than the 7970. It OC's better, and is only a fraction lower performance.

hwbot.org has about a thousand 7950 submissions and a thousand 7970 submissions.

Average OC for the 7950 is 1146 mhz.

Average OC for the 7970 is 1212 mhz.

Yes, the 7950 is better bang for the buck but like many others, I'd spend the extra bucks and get a 7970.

^ This! So If I'm looking to get the best price performance and OC capability how about the Shappire Dual-X 7970: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202008

Then I can just slap a GHz Edition Bios on it and go to town OC'ing. tongue.gif

Edit:
Also mcg75, I noticed you own the Vapor-X GHz edition. How do you like it? Did you have troubles getting that OC and like all the comments on the egg say does it really sag your motherboard? If so, how do you support it?

Liking it pretty good so far.

Yeah, mine does sag actually. It happened within a week of install but hasn't gotten any worse since. I'm kind of scared supporting it at this point might cause more problems than it solves.

Mine can oc to 1250 mhz on stock voltage and I've tested that through a lot of benches and games.

I just figured out how to modify Afterburner for voltage. I've tested Heaven repeatedly at 1315 mhz and 1.3v so far.

But the OC is always luck of the draw. If you listen to some people around here, 1200 mhz 7950 and 1300 mhz 7970's are common. But in reality, they aren't.

That's really true, and I'm kind of leaning towards that card to be honest. Sad to hear about the extreme sagging (might have to pick up one of those jacks that they use for the 7990 rolleyes.gif), but you said you found a way to modify afterburner? How so? I had always heard that Sapphires cards only played well with Trixx.

Update: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PowerColor-Power-Jack-Graphics-Card-Support-from-6-1-cm-2-4-Inches-to-15-cm-5-/350699298880?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51a74ea040

I finally found the PowerJack! The only other place that has them is the Canadian side of NCIX and I couldn't figure out how to get them to ship to the US. (It would be nice though considering it's WAY cheaper from there and I'm always skeptical of buying anything off Ebay) redface.gif
