Distinguish between OC ability to heat transfer.
If the CPU keeps in the same temps, the OC might be higher in haswell vs IB for example.
The only issue here might be actually keeping the CPU cold enough.

But given the same conditions of a haswell CPU and IB CPU, the haswell CPU might be OCed better and be much faster.

TIM or no TIM, that is not the question.

Well, unless the Haswell can SERIOUSLY overclock, I don't see giving up a 37% overclock on an Ivy Bridge 3770K for a 5-10% gain in a stock Haswell. So basically, unless it can pick up another 27-32% from overclocking, I just don't see it being the wonder chip for the Desktop.

Now, for mobile, Haswell will be awesome!

I can already say with absolute certainty that I will not be upgrading next generation. The extra 200 Mhz equivalent on my OC isn't worth the trouble.

Because it has been implied by many sources and we have no idea how the thermal paste (yes thermal paste, not just TIM, solder would also be TIM) will affect OCing. To some people even if it affects the chips like ivy, it won't matter because of sub-zero cooling.

Also ideal for overclocking depends on a person's needs. From my pov IB is much better for OCing than sandy is.

The highest frequency I can run my 3930K at is 5.6ghz, if I had an IB CPU I could run it at much higher frequencies.

It just clocks higher if you have the cooling.

Haswell will absolutely not be big leap in terms of single threaded performance from ivy bridge; the goal is battery life and graphics performance. Nothing more nothing less.

The jump from IB to haswell will be similar to SB to IB, around 7-10%. I'm still excited because it promises ultrabooks and hybrid tablets with up to 14 hours of battery life (if intel is to be believed), that itself is very exciting news.

edit: also as others have mentioned, the out of box OC headroom should be really, really good. Can't wait to see how well it handles in this respect.

Oh I see. However that applies to sub-zero cooling and low delta water cooling only. That's less than 10% of OCN users. Because even with watercooling I can't see anyone achieving such frequencies without a ridiculous amount of rad surface for CPU only.

What I think of as good OC ability (and I think most people agree) is more OC headroom from the chip itself combined with temperatures that are OK for most people. If the latter is missing, technically the CPU has good OC ability but only for a small amount of people.

I just think that ruining the temperatures of a CPU just to replace the solder between the die and IHS with thermal paste and save money from production can't lead to an "ideal for overclocking" CPU. Unlocked (K) CPUs should have no stupid thermal paste in them.

I don't understand why some people take these benchmarks seriously. This site calls the board x87, looks shady and no site with a real haswell sample would break NDA. I highly doubt these are legit, even so this might be an early ES sample and the retail version might be much different. Furthermore the haswell sample was clocked lower than the 3770k. I want to see some clock for clock performance gains, not this stock clock stuff. These benches are most likely fake as intel them self stated haswell is at least 10% better than ivy bridge.

On another note, i hope Intel uses solder in all K series CPUs, not that TIM stuff.
