ohhgourami's GPU, PCI fan mod

Thread Starter
I've always wondered if there were better ways to cool your GPUs. Even with the custom cooler on my Gigabyte Windforce GTX 670, it idles around 55C when I have the fans set to the minimum speed. As some of you may already know, I'm VERY picky about noise, but what can I do to keep my GPU cooler and keep noise down? Well that's when I thought about using the stability of PCI slots on the case to mount two fans right beneath the GPU to assist the GPU fans!

I looked around the internet and found a cheap PCI fan mount for ~$6 on "the bay". It was designed for 80/92mm fans so the holes aren't quite perfect, but it is designed very well and can easily be adapted for 120 or 140mm fans.

Here are a few pictures of what it looks like after everything has been put together:

Notice the screw holes for the brackets don't match the fan so I used paperclips to hold them together. Zip-ties would probably work better but I don't have any on me right now. You could probably completely ditch the metal fan-to-fan bracket and use zip-ties too.

Here's how it looks like when installed in my case:

Notice it fits perfectly too! Both of my 800rpm Scythe Slipstream fans cover almost the entire length of my GPU.

Now for the most important part - temperatures and noise level. Sorry I don't have anything to objectively read the noise levels, but I can tell you the differences is dramatic.

Here is some approximate (+ - 2C) temperature readings using Speedfan:

Idling 20% fan speed of GPU:
GPU only: 55C
With fans @300rpm: 45C

Noise Level wise, they are both the same. But notice temps drop a dramatic 10C!

Max Load:
GPU only: 72C
With fans @800rpm: 63C

Again, we see almost a 10C difference! Because of the custom fan curve set for my GPU, noise levels were slightly different, but the cooling is very different. When playing games for long periods of time, the extra fan help a lot with noise. My CPU fans are normally louder and they aren't that loud to begin with. I'd say the whole setup is under 25dB at full load.

By using this cheap, yet very effective method, you can cool a GPU dramatically yet keep noise down. This is a MUST do if your case has enough room! thumb.gif

Nice! I'll have to give this a shot. I currently have an h70 on my 7850 with a 120mm fan blowing toward the VRM's and ram chips, but this would be a much cleaner way of cooling them.

Thanks, and + rep to you thumb.gif

Thanks!

I wish someone would manufacture this for 120/140mm fans. This seemed to be a decently popular mod many years ago. Not sure why no one has bothered with this in the past couple years.

Yup, I saw that a couple of days ago too. It really doesn't make that big of a difference though. I swapped to using zip-ties instead of paperclips which gave it a cleaner look. The most important piece is that PCI bracket.

Helped a mate change fans on his 7950 yesterday. He had a couple of Arctic F12 TC's laying around so pulled the cooler of his GPU took cover & fans off of cooler and zip-tied fans onto cooler. Mounted it back up and slipped the temp sensor probes between board and cooler. Temps dropped 5-10c and all is quiet unless extreme gaming. Not bad for a temporary bodge to see what it would be like.

Hopefully he'll be along and give more details.

Some guys on SPCR were telling me to just take off the GPU cooler and strap the fans directly to the heatsink.

If the fans are PWM, you could get one of those mini 4-pin GPU adapters.

Maybe I really should get a Thermalright Shaman later down the road...

I was going to say on those boards that strapping them directly onto the heatsink will make a significant difference. As nice as manufacturer cooling is getting the fans are still thin and small/whiny and ineffective.
