ohhgourami's GPU, PCI fan mod - Page 5

Two. That was the size of the cooler fins. Post # 22 above has pics of two different GPU mods.

Will 1 be enough for me? I was thinking that if you use an odd number of fans, then the center one can be placed right over the gpu.

GPU is not what fan is directly cooling Fan / Fans are cooling the GPU cooler which are usually heatpipe coolers. We want airflow over the whole area of the cooler.

What exactly does your graphics card look like?

Okay, it has 2x 90mm fans on a 5x heatpipe cooler with fins the full length of PCB.
The cooler and component heatsinks are designed to have fans / airflow over the length of it, not just in the center. wink.gif

Edit:
Not all video cards respond to this kind of modification.

Edit 2:
Something I have found is some video card fan speed controls will not allow fans to idle below 20%. ASUS GTX 580 DCU II for example have a minimum idle of 1080rpm.. no matter what you do that's as slow as they will run.. and 1080rpm is not silent.

Mine idles at 1380 rpm

Sometimes taking the stock shroud and fans off and using other fans does not improve performance.

Some cards might not need as much cooling so case fans might not benefit. I think it's still worth a shot though.

I wouldn't bother with high static pressure fans. Just go for high airflow since it's not hard to push air through a GPU heatsink anyway.

If 1380rpm is the lowest you can adjust the idle than there is a good chance that the replacement fans will also idle very fast.

Some cards have better stock cooling than others and changing fans is not enough to get better cooling. A bigger cooler is needed to get better cooling.

As for not bothering with "high static pressure" fans, how well a fan performs is a combination of static pressure and cfm. The higher the rating of both is translates into better airflow.

A fan rated 50cfm & 3mm H2O will flow more air through a cooler than one rated 50cfm & 1mm H2O simple because it takes more resistance to stop the airflow. . 2mm H2O more. . before it stops flowing air. Remember, static pressure is the point the pressure (resistance) air becomes static... stops moving. 0.5mm H20 resistance is 1/2 of 1.0mm H2O rating, but only 1/6 of 3mm rating. . means fan will flow much more of it's 50cfm rating than the 1.0mm rated fan. .

I have a feeling the speeds can go lower with software control...

It's a combination of both, but if you had to choose one that was one or the other side of the spectrum, then one rated at a higher CFM would probably be better.
