If a total newbie around 40 years old asked you why do desktop pc's draw more power than laptop pc's, how would you explain to him? in order to get him fully understood.

For starters, the average run of the mill pc has a 400/500 watt powersuply powering them. It may not draw that much but PC's require a lot of power. The idea of a laptop is to consolidate and streamline the pc into something more efficient to use on the go.

They need to run off that battery for at least a few hours to be of use so they are made to use less power but their small design opens it up to creating a lot of heat and not much room for cooling.

Laptop technology, in every component from CPU architecture, video card architecture, hard drives, etc are designed to use as little power as possible to promote a long battery life. As desktops are plugged into the wall, the focus of the components is usually based around the best performance you can get in certain price ranges. Like farm tractors and race cars, both can be very capable, but in very different ways.

Alright lets say after this. He'll ask you again..
Can you possibly put a laptop component into desktop? Such as CPU,GPU etc? and Why? and why it's not possible?

Laptop technology is not meant to be upgraded. It is designed for power efficiency and small form factor. Anything that crams a full system into a small form factor limits your upgradability and is -usually- harder to work on.

Nope, the laptop is kind of a all in one locking in board that fits in that small case. The only thing you can use in a PC is the hardrive with a conveter cable because those too are infact different. ( well that was in 2001 when i had a laptop hdd in a desktop, idk if now they are all SATA) But they are slimmer as well, you can't put a regular HDD in a laptop.

a desktop needs the extra power for the more powerful gpus you can put in them plus all the extra harddrives you can put in them my computer at the moment contains 4 harddrives i could put another 3 harddrives in it if i wished and later on this year i hop to upgrade my gpu and add 1 if not 2 extra harddrives it will mean i will have to upgrade the power supply to around 700w 750w to cop with the extra demand also in 2 or 3 years time i most likely will need to upgrade the motherboard and chip and most off this you cant do on a laptop
