Their version of unlocking is being able to go from lets say Verizon to AT&T or to any other provider. THIS DOES NOT MEAN ROOTING.

Regardless, this is just very stupid.

I bring to the forefront this comment as well as many others in this thread that proves you did not read the article.

Rooting/jailbreaking your tablet is ALREADY illegal. Rooting your phone is not, for now.

wth is the difference? andriod is android whether on a tablet or phone, IOS the same, windows probably.

how did they draw that line?

and if i recall, you have to buy a tablet out right the telecoms need not recoup anything from that, they weren't even around during the transaction.

OOOOOOH its so simple now
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
This mind blowingly stupid decision means that when an American buys themselves a new Nexus 10 (for example) and then, you know, acts like they own the tablet they just bought, they can be fined or even imprisoned for doing so. For real. The reason given being that if you root a tablet, you could watch pirated movies on it (please: nobody tell them you can watch avi or mpg etc files just fine on a no-rooted Android, for goodness sakes or they’ll probably make it illegal to use Android!).

Makes perfect sense.

Seems like this goes against the "cruel and unusual punishment" clause. Not sure that stiff of a penalty would actually stand up in court...

It seems my GS3 is in the clear to be legally unlocked (purchased before January 29th)... Might have to do it just to try it.

I mean if this law is to prevent people from getting a $99 phone under contract then selling for $600 on Ebay I sort of get that but if they break their contract don't they have to pay the fee? I dunno how that works as I've been a loyal Verizon customer for 7 years...

whats really stupid is if you sell your phone on ebay, aren't you still paying for it through your provider anyway?

No, this is about people at home jailbreaking it and unlock it on their own unofficially.

I wonder how many eBay auctions will get pulled, have been pulled, or voluntarily pulled by the seller. I also wonder how many have been listed since the law has been passed. I'm sure most people don't know. I hope not to many find out the hard way. A convicted felon... why? I unlocked an iPhone and I sold or tried to sell it.

This is just hilarious..... to the point where you have to laugh at these fines and punishment because of how silly they sound. How would these laws be actually enforced though?
One of many stupid laws and bills that have been passed, or are going to be moving through the system. It seems we the people of the Divided States of America have no say in what happens anymore. Welcome to democracy my friends. Big government, no choice.
