HD 7870 or GTX 660? - Page 2

Also avoid going to a place that would have old 7870's laying around. The 78xx series upon release did have a few issues where they would just black screen randomly (happened to my HIS). Have had ZERO problems with my Gigabyte 7870 OC. Always liked Gigabytes products. I'll just neglect to mention I had a Gigabyte 4890 OC go up in smoke when I first plugged it in. Not even kidding. lol. Pretty sure by examining without removing anything, there was no thermal paste between the GPU/Cooler.

These issues mostly affected Sapphire/Powercolor cards.

An HD 7870 will deliver higher performance overall vs. the GTX 660, as mentioned by the past posters (it's also a little pricer too), but the HD 7870 is a much safer bet if you plan on playing with higher MSAA settings. The GTX 660 (and the more expensive GTX 660 Ti too) both use 192-bit vs. the HD 7870's 256-bit, and Tom's Hardware found that 192-bit to be limiting. It's more future-proof IMO to have at least 256-bit for serious gamers.

If you want a model recommendation, "GIGABYTE GV-R787OC-2GD" is a good model. I've built several PCs with it myself and my friends have never been happier :-).

I was in your position about a month ago. I bought a evga 660 sc edition and took it back for a msi 7870 ghz edition. The 7870 is quit abit better for around the same price. Just my 2 cents tho. The 660 seemed gimped to me. It was already throttling on me just playing a regular game on 1080 with out more opverclocking. With only 1 pcie plug you cant get much more out of it from what i saw atleat. Sorry was just rambling

Meh, I have a 660 ti after coming from a 7970 that clocked at 1.3 core and 1.7 mem. In all honesty I can't tell the difference between 2x MSAA and 8x MSAA... and unless you are looking at a side by side comparison you really aren't going to notice the difference between FXAA and 2x MSAA, or maybe even no AA. For me, after my 7970 died I decided to go back to EVGA, the frame buffer delay was the huge reason for me. Even with vsync my 7970 would have a slight tear in every single game I play.

I would, in my opinion, recommend an EVGA 660 ti. Just the 2 GB model would be fine, and no need to pay for an overclocked one, as the normal will boost just as high. thumb.gif
