Hey guys need some help deciding on something. I just RMA'd my GPU, so my main rig is down until I get it back from Sapphire (I was able to convince the Rep to set up an "Advanced RMA"). Just got the tracking number, waiting for it to be updated to get the delivery date.

Anyways I was thinking of getting a backup GPU for times like this. I have a separate rig at my dad's that is running as a Home Server so I can always re-purpose it as a secondary gaming rig (Dual-boot) if needs be with the 2nd GPU.

My main rig is listed in my specifications. I currently game at 1600x900, with a two monitor setup.

My budget is $300.00

My choices are so far:

1. 7950 (cross-fire)
2. 7870 (move to 2nd rig after I get my GPU from RMA)
3. 7850 ((move to 2nd rig after I get my GPU from RMA)
4. Other Temp GPU that will be moved to 2nd rig after GPU returns from RMA

So what do you think I should do?

You're missing HD 7870 XT Tahiti LE which can crossfire with the HD7950 tongue.gif

If you're gaming at 1600x900 I'd say HD7850 , you don't need HD7950 crossfire at that resolution

I think it really only depends on what you're willing to spend. If you're willing to spend the money for a second 7950 I think you'll get the most use out of it in crossfire. A backup GPU will just collect dust in a server.

there is no point in putting the HD 7950 in the 2nd PC if you won't use it often. also if you will get the card within a week or two just wait it out and don't spend the money on a new card.

Well I got them to do an cross-ship RMA, shipped my card to them yesterday they shipped the replacement yesterday as well. Tracking said it should be here tomorrow. Good thing I asked for a advanced rma option else it would be a ~3 week turn around

Gonna switch out my monitors too for some 1080p minimum so may go x-fire after all :-)

a HD 7950 with an average overclock to 1.15 ghz will play any game maxed out at 1080p very well. in fact even for 1440p a single HD 7950 will do quite well if you stick to MSAA 2x in demanding games. CF is required for multi monitor.
