for computers, tv, speakers, all that needs surge protector i reckon, would the APC essential series be okay for that or do i need to fork out to get the expensive models with high joules ??

I dont think there is any surge protectors for in home use that will work if hit by lightning. I had a tv on a monster surge protector and it killed it when a power surge from lightning came through. 2 ways to go 1. unplug your stuff when a storm comes through. Or 2. call your insurance and get it protected through them . Its dirt cheap I think mine is 80.00 a year up to 40,000 coverage for all items inside my home just make sure you find out what you need to make a claim like receipts or if you can specify a value on the items when you start your policy . Try to claim a warranty on a surge protector they will find a way that it was your fault. Chances are you will never get hit with a surge to kill it anyways.

not just surges though, they give you a "clean" power, or filter it in some way.

Clean power is a gimmick. Also the more connections you make the worse the signal becomes unless your adding something to make it better like an amplifier for cable.
