Where do you live? You can pick up a 3570K or a 3770K for a cheaper price at Microcenter.

closest one is about an hour away, and that somewhat disregards traffic. Not worth the trip. Great idea though.

Oh no I see a Intel Vs. AMD debate brewing! Well OP, the i5 and the 8350 are neck and neck. The 8350 has more cores but the i5 has better "per-core" performance. I personally own AMD and plan on upgrading to the 8350 (so trust me, I've done all the homework on the 8350). The 8350 is an excellent CPU and a HUGE step up for AMD. No, it doesn't compete with the high end i7's, but for under $200 you are getting an excellent multi-core CPU with excellent overclocking capabilities (with the right cooling the 8350 can hit 5Ghz!).
First of all let's get one thing straight. One of you mentioned upgrading your CPU in a year or two. Honestly, either processor is going to last you YEARS, even overclocked. All three, the 3770k, i5 model, and the 8350 AMD, can last you a good 3 to 5 years, maybe even longer. Gaming and software are a bit behind on core count and anything over 4Ghz is a very fast CPU that is going to last a very long time. So I think we can rule "future proofing" and "upgradability" out of this discussion.

Right now I think you want to pick the best thing that is going to last you the most years. OP, althought I love AMD, I think you should go with Intel right now. Why? Gaming wise, it's better, the i5 has better per-core performance. It's fast and it's MUCH more energy efficient than the 8350. Second - there are two HUGE set backs to AMD motherboards, including the 990FXA (which I own except I have the UD3 version). The 8350, which is AMD's flagship CPU, does not support RAM speeds past 1866Mhz. In terms of "future-proofing" and "upgradability", I abslutely hate that and right now I suffer from alot of blue screen/stability issues with higher speed RAM on AMD. Intel motherboards support RAM up to a whopping 2800Mhz. And to anyone saying that RAM isn't important, you're just crazy. No, the "amount" isn't important, but the speed/timings is! And that fast RAM is going to future proof your system and Intel natively supports the fast speeds so you won't suffer from stability issues.

Second - I think you should shop around for a different intel board and pick one that's PCI Express 3.0. That's right, AMD currently (last time I checked anyway) does NOT have any boards that support PCI 3.0 for you graphics. Is this a huge deal? No, but down the road, the higher bandwidth/better graphics cards that come out are not going to utilize their speed as good on a 2.0 board.
So yea, the intel is a better CPU and the motherboard is more future proof supporting PCI Express 3.0 and high speed 2800+ RAM. That motherboard you picked though does not support PCI 3.0 but still, I would go with the Intel if you're building from scratch. Sorry, AMD!

The Intel mobo shown on page 1 actually does have PCIe 3.0 check manufacturer website, Newegg description is wrong.

Additionally, I do not want an Intel v AMD fanboy fight. So as OP I'm requesting none of that wink.gif

Lastly, I am not disregarding what you said above me, but that doesn't respond to the linked videos at all. In fact, some of your points are the exact points he was making. Now if he has no credibility or is biased and that can be shown, then cool. Otherwise, I still would like to continue to see data over conjecture. As I am a "gamer" and do enjoy streams, those videos pushed me back in the middle from the Intel camp I was hovering in for a few hours.

EDIT: You do make a very good point about the RAM and it's something that has definitely irritated me as well.

There's been a lot of questions raised by that video. Long story short, something's wrong with some numbers somewhere. The overwhelming majority of reviewers find that the i5 is the better processor for gaming. There's one guy (maybe two) who do not. I guess you'll just have to choose whether you want to believe the vast majority of reviewers, or that guy.

As for the specific games I mentioned above (SC2, Shogun 2, Civ 5), many, many benchmarks, general consensus (& corroborating benchmarks) on game-specific fan sites, and the relatively obvious reason for superior i5 performance (all three games benefit from faster per-core performance). It would be foolish to assume all those different reasons to see the i5 are better are wrong because some guy did benchmarks for different games.

Want to see the data yourself? Just google "SC2 cpu benchmark" or "bit tech shogun 2 8350 review" (without the quotation marks, of course).

Either way, it's not the biggest difference in the world. As I've said a few times, in most gaming scenarios both are going to provide more than enough CPU power.

its a fair point.

however 3dmark also has the 8350 as better.

Well that's the point, the i7 blows the 8350 away.

I do want to put another point out there, both the Xbox and PS have been leaked with AMD 8core processors. With game devs optimizing games for 8core systems, that could translate better for 8core CPUs.

I think the only way I can justify the FX-8350 over Intel is if I go with the ASUS Crosshair V/Formula-Z because its more future proof of AMD mobos. Then when next AMD line is released I can more easily upgrade.

3Dmark is multi-threaded. Games, as a general rule, are not. Hence, 3Dmark is useless. The hyperthreading of the i7 helps in 3Dmark. But not in games. Cores 5-8 of the fx-8350 help in 3Dmark, but not in games.

There are actually other reasons 3Dmark is not at all useful as a games benchmark, but that's a (very) long topic.

The only way you can justify the fx-8350 is to spend more money now for equipment that is (marginally) worse now because in the future it might give you the option to spend more money to upgrade to something that will be a little better (maybe) in the future?

There's a reason people say future proofing doesn't exist.
