Trying to Decide Between Power Supplies

I only really need like 750-850 watts right now but im going to but a rosewill blackhawk super tower to enclose my water cooled system, and I need a new psu since the one I'm currently using is an obscure Antec CPX form factor.

I have it down to three, mostly because of the price, though i am willing to consider more expensive options.

1. Thermaltake Toughpower XT Platinum 1275 W for 225 usd

2. Rosewill Tachyon 1000 W 80plus platinum for $190

3. Rosewill LIGHTNING Series LIGHTNING-1000 1000W 80plus gold for $145

I'm kinda leaning towards the tachyon right now, and I don't think im even going to go tri sli or above so only reason why 1275w one is even up there is because its on sale, plus a 7 year warranty, though the price could be better. From what I read there all decent power supplies each of them with their flaws, though I can't find much about the rosewill psu's.

Is it worth going platinum? I'm kinda on the line on this one, the downside of the tachyon is no built in surge protection unlike the other rosewill unit, and the fan controller needs to be improved, along with the fan itself.

Update: the thermaltake unit just sold out I'm down to the two rosewill's little more than hour left till the sale ends, so I gotta decide whether or not I'm going to go gold or platinum before then.

Update: I bought the gold lighting 1000w, I can always cancel the order if I see a good reason to buy something better

JonnyGuru gave the Tachyon 1K a pretty good review IIRC. But in this case, either would be way overkill, which kind of defeats the purpose of paying more for higher efficiency. Your max power draw should be well under 700W after factoring in PSU efficiency (with prime/furmark) and your gaming loads would probably be in the ~400W range, meaning in regular usage you'd never even reach a 1000W unit's peak efficiency.

Phaedrus wrote a post explaining the whole efficiency curve/load here: http://www.overclock.net/t/872013/50-load-myth/0_100

If you're set on only one of these two you might as well get the cheapest unit.

13 fans 5 hard drives, 2 optical drives, an ssd, two overclocked 5870's and an oc'ed 3770k, I know in most situations I shouldn't pull much power, but I like alot of room for upgrades hence the massive case.

Cant forget my pump and sound card, and I have read all about that, as long as I pull more 200 watts idle and 500 watts gaming and such, and I should be getting close to that, though i need a tester to know for sure.

That's fine, I'm just pointing out that in this case you won't really see much benefit in efficiency from a platinum PSU (not that the difference is massive to begin with tongue.gif). It definitely wouldn't be worth paying $50 more for efficiency alone.

A platinum 760W unit would probably be a more practical solution since you don't plan on going 3-way CFX/SLI.

There is one, 750w rosewill fortress on sale for 110, and that's screaming deal for a very solid looking psu, but I don't really want any below 850 watts, and all the 850 watt psu's I've considered are more expensive than the rosewill lightning.

Though I may not go tri sli(I think it's just a bit much), I do tend to stick to the more power hungry cards, and they can really suck down the juice, especially when overclocked beyond the preset overclock limits, not to mention the massive loss in idle efficiency, which is probably what I will do to my 5870's before I get something better.
