esXi Home Server Build

Thread Starter
I've been looking at upgrading my esxi host for quite some time now. It's the machine its running on is not suited for the environment, but was used only as a test, that turned into a long term thing. I have been doing some research, and I can't seem to make up my mind about going AMD or Intel. I am Intel at heart, but fail to see the need to spend the money for something that is going to sit under the stairs. Is AMD worth while looking at for a esxi home server?

My primary functions will be windows server, sql server 2012, pfsense smoothwall, a linux box, and a few others maybe.

Are there any recommendations for a flexible solution to allow for upgrades in the future?

AMD's AM3+ socket isn't supposed to change for a while. Intel's 1155 is gone soon. So unless you are getting a 2011 socket which are currently a little expensive for the more decent boards I believe that even though Intel offers the higher performance in terms of future upgrades and costs AMD is the way to go for now.

I can't say much for how well it will actually work though with AMD as I dont know much about esXi.

What's the budget?

I would say somewhere between 500-1000. This includes the board, chip, memory, extra nics.
