Crucial M4 going bad

Thread Starter
I have had a crucial M4 128gb for a couple of years in my work computer and yesterday suddenly it failed to load Windows. I check the error log and replaced a few system files and it can go into Windows but many software cannot open normally. I realize it might be a serious problem so I copied out all my important data.

Today I tried to reinstall Windows hoping it was a software system problem. But after I installed some software the disk was unbootable, and in Windows installation it refused to be formatted. I plug it into another working computer and it cannot be recognized in BIOS. I think it is dead.....

Luckily I have my data copied out yesterday smile.gif

Anyone had problem with crucial M4? I thought it is a solid brand.

even the best drives will have failures even now and then. can't ask %100 success from everyone

Does your computer still see it in the BIOS? Try updating the firmware.

And as it was stated, every brand, no matter how solid, will have some failures.

Crucial is indeed one of the best. But even when you have a really low failure rate of of less than 3% like Crucial, that still means 2-3 failures per 100 drives.

I know, this M4 has been used heavily for more than two years, and I never turned it off (I leave it always on in power options). Overall I am OK with it. But unlike spinning disks, SSD dies so suddenly, if I was a little late in copying my data out, it would be a disaster.... I learned my lesson, in future I will only leave my important data on a Raid1 volume.

It runs fine this morning, but I cannot see it in BIOS now.... I am not sure if I can update the firmware. I will try it with another computer this weekend.

I would be careful about updating the firmware, some owners have problems with the latest version, 040H. What version do you have now? Do you have anything earlier than 0309?

Actually it sounds like your m4 could use the power removal trick described in Crucial forums. That is, leave it powered down, unconnected from the PS for several hours. Sounds weird I know, but you could read about it for yourself.

Is it still in warranty?

If so, I'd send it back for a new one as soon as you can!
