What made you switch to PC Gaming

Thread Starter
The title pretty much says it all. What ultimately made you switch to PC gaming?

For me I enjoyed playing on my Xbox 360 with my friends and that was what kept me hooked to consoles for the longest time. Then the PC bug hit, i started becoming jealous of all the mods/texture packs that PC games like Skyrim had. However, I had decided that it was something that I could live without. Then I noticed how games on PC looked so much better than consoles, but the Xbox still had its hold on me. Then I looked at the deals that Steam had, and jealousy hit again, and once again I brushed it off as a necessary evil. So what made me switch? What made me decide to ditch the controller for a Mouse and Keyboard?

One word, Community.

For example, I have my really good rounds in Call of Duty and Halo. Then the slump hits, and when that slump hits it never fails that I hear some ten year old (not trying to be stereotypical here) yelling at me to do one of the following:

"Get a life."
"Learn to play the game."
"Insert random slang, slander, obscene words here"

So one night, when I grew tired of this i fired up my PC and started playing League of Legends for the first time in a long while, it was a miracle I remembered my username and password. I played like 20 rounds and was only good in about 2 of them. out of the other 18 here is what I noticed, 10 of those rounds someone came and helped me in my lane, 5 of those rounds they offered pointers in the in-game chat, 2 they let me try to figure it out myself (which I did) and the remaining round I had someone ridicule my performance.

For the one guy who ridiculed my performance I explained to him that it has been a while since I last played and then he apologized about his remark. That's when I realized that it seems that a majority of online players on a PC are actually mature individuals that only cared about on thing, having fun. Granted there are still those who care about wins and K/D Ratios, but still the kindness of the PC gaming community is what finally made me put down the controller and start my transition to PC gaming.

I thank anyone who read that massive wall of text, but now i ask what made you change to PC gaming?

Finally moving to a place that had decent internet, world of warcraft. Those are main reasons. Before that it was xbox and ps2 all the time for me. Although I have to admit that I do miss it some, things were simpler then before i discovered online games.

Those days are long past, now it's nothing but trashtalking fools everywhere. Years ago when I played darkness falls the crusade it was decent... even wow was decent till halfway through wotlk. since then it has gone downhill big time in every game I have tried that was online. The downfall of the community aspect is what has made me virtually quit gaming on my pc (as I only can get into multiplayer online games).

I will tl;dr your post.
Childish community on XBL, mature community on PC.

I was also an early PC gamer, although I split my time between N64 and PC, but sadly I can't even fire up my PS3/Wii/360/DS/PSP for more than 2 hours nowadays.

edit: You'll eventually find the children's section in the PC community, especially the ones who are 25+ years old and complain about hackers. biggrin.gif

When I was born, my dad recently switched to IT work. My brother would eventually follow suit. We didn't have many luxuries, but we did have some fairly nice computers (there was a time when paying 1500-3000 for a decent desktop/laptop was normal). We had a total crap 30 year old car that was worth about the same as one of those computer.

From 3, I saw a glowing, red, yellow, green screen (desktop wallpaper I guess). Kept trying to hit keyboard but nothing would happen.

Go to 5-6, I started playing Civ 2, and later, Red Alert 2. All spiraled from there.

Btw, I play a ton of League of Legends (thousands of games played already) and I'd say your fairly lucky. Don't get me wrong, I love the game, but the community is meh at best. Has everything bad, griefs, trolls, smurfs which ruin games for beginners, but mostly just flamers who won't stop trash talking. Still better than many other communities solely for how successful Riot has been at preventing hacking, which just ruins far too many games completely.

I was tired of playing team objective games and then having a team that thought it was team deathmatch. I didn't really care for the whining 10 year olds either. Also keyboard and mouse are way superior to a controller.

when consoles are declining i.e. when console graphic became no longer appealing to me. but I've always been kept top of the line PCs with me, either for gaming or work. so yeah, haven't touched consoles since 2011(3 month in 2012 I was sunk into console gaming exclusively for dragon's dogma, amazing game)

I will have no problem jump back to console gaming only if next gen proves to be as good.

I know they exist out there, it seems it's less likely to come across them on a PC. Also I never really fire my Xbox up anymore unless I want to play some Forza. thumb.gif

I'm sorry I didn't mean to imply that all PC gamers started on consoles. In hindsight it seems that I did unintentionally doh.gif

for me it's graphics, the ability to mod in some cases, and the sheer power of a tricked out PC. Also, and somewhat secondary--instantly download games!
