Need help Diagnosing Sound skipping, popping, clicking in various games.

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is even in the right section. So I'll apologize in advance If that's the case.

For months now I have been tearing my hair out trying to fix this issue I've been having.

In a handful of games my sound pops, clicks, skips etc. Its only during certain parts of the games. Far cry 3, hitman absolution, metro 2033 are the main ones. Half life 2 does it as well if I keep clicking the gravity gun secondary fire. It pops.

I have checked my dpc latency, not an issue well within limits. I have changed so much hardware and still nothing. I went through new motherboard, hdd, gpu, sound card,CPU and it happens with all kinds of headphones and my speakers too.

I was on windows 7 64 bit and then upgraded to windows 8. No change.

I've done so many fresh installs of windows its insane.

I've fiddled with hpet and every timing setting and nothing. Reset and upgraded BIOS, overclocked and set as default.

I love PC gaming but I'm ready to give up
I don't get what's left for me to fix? Psu, ram? That seems doubtful.

Please help guys. I will rep for any good suggestion that I havent thought of yet.
If you fix my problem I'll even buy you a beer lol.

My specs:

Windows 8 pro x64
Msi p67 gd65
Msi gtx 680
2600k
Sound blaster z( also had essence stx)
Corsair hx1050 watt
Ocz vertex 3 240gb
Wd black 750gb
G skill rip jaws 4x2 gb 1600mhz.
Corsair m60 mouse
Razer black widow ultimate

Sounds like a sound card driver issue. Does the skipping/popping also happen when you use the integrated sound card?

Yup I've tried the onboard, 2 different sound cards and the nvidia gpu sound. Its not the driver or sound hardware.

Did you replace the original motherboard with a different one, or did you RMA or otherwise replace the same one?

Do you run the games off of the SSD or the HDD? Serious Sam 3 used to skip here when levels were loading until I put a faster HDD in (I'll more than likely Steam move it to the SSD next time I play).

Have you done anything with your NIC or NIC drivers?

Ya I actually first replaced my GD65 with an M77 Mpower and still the same. Then I replaced that with an ASUS P8xxx something or other. Same issue.

I ran them off an SSD at first and then switched to an HDD and the same thing.

And i updated my NIC drivers and also completely disabled it. Like i said i have ruled out DPC issues so its most likely not a NIC DPC issue. I also checked the IRQ and nothing is conflicting.

THe Asus board even used an intel NIC and i had the same probelm, so i ruled that out too.

Thanks.

Well, since you've pretty much ruled out any possible combination of hardware components causing the problem -- have you tried reinstalling the games? I guess if you reinstalled Windows, you would have had to do that, too.

How about removing two sticks of RAM? Are you using XMP to set timing, or setting it manually? Tried running the RAM at 1333?

I suppose a flaky power supply is possible -- but you'd think that that would manifest itself in so many other ways besides skipping audio.

What do your advanced settings for Sound devices in Control Panel look like?

Ya I've resinstalled the games so many times i have gone through my internet bandwidth lol

Ya im using 2 sticks of 4gb with xmp on, it runs at its default of 1600 9-9-9 timings. I will try resetting the timings back to normal. I figured ram would cause issues a lot worse than sound pops if they were faulty or set incorrectly.

I ruled out power supply since it would cause more than this if it were faulty, that and for me to buy a new supply without knowing if it was faulty in the 1000 watt range would be expensive. No guarantee they would take it back.(these guys hate me for bringing pc parts back frequently lol)

The advanced sound panel for the Sound blaster has it set to 48khz, 16bit and 5.1. The settings for the nvidia hd audio is at 48khz, 16bit with the sound enhancements off and also set at 5.1.

So you're using the Sennheiser headphones -- what is your speaker setup?

I have harmon kardon hkts 15's in a 5.1 setup which is powered by a Denon avr 591. I feed the avr from my GTX 680's hdmi port.

I have tried other headphones and speakers, didnt make a difference.

Where do you plug the headphones in -- the Denon receiver? Have you tried just a basic 2.1 or pair of powered monitor speakers at the analog line out jack?

I'm getting a little out of my element now, as I've never run HDMI audio -- I'm an old school analog 2.1 guy.
