I have f5a and on the gigabyte site its says there is f5f beta. I've been so close a few times to flashing the bios. I would just hate to do it then it not work. and be stuck computerless.

I'm not sure with the EP31-DS3L.  It's not a good motherboard for overclocking to begin with.  If you had the EP35-DS3L, then you'd have a better chance.  To be honest, I'm impressed and very surprised that you got the E5300 to 4.1 GHz, but of course the E7200 is a completely different CPU.

If you flashed to F5F Beta, then you should be able to flash right back to F5A.  At least, that's what I was able to do with the EP45-UD3P:  I was able to flash to any BIOS I wanted for that board back and forth as many times as I wanted.  As long as you're very careful and you do the flashing within the BIOS itself very carefully, then you should have no problems.  Although, I don't know if F5F Beta will provide any better overclocking, so I'll leave it up to you.

how would I flash back? I don't have a copy of the f5a. is there a way to save it off the chip? and what do you mean by flash it from within the bios itself. got a link maybe??

I remember that I saw in my manual different ways of flashing, and one of them was doing it right in the BIOS itself.  I kind of remember saving my BIOS too, but I also downloaded a fresh one from Gigabyte's website.

I have to apologize right now though because I have to go to sleep.  I'm very sleepy.

nevermind on the "I don't have a copy of f5a" I just went into the bios and I see you can save it. so I now have it on a disk. and I get what your saying now too. don't use one of those "flash from windows" things. well since I have a copy of f5a I feel better about trying it now. bout 3 months ago, I flashed a bios on an older p3 system, and for whatever reason it wouldn't see the hard drives afterwards. well there are no older versions of that bios on the web anywhere, so unless I wanna buy a new bios chip, that board is toast. that's what was makin me nervous about flashing this one. thanks again, i'll probably try that tomorrow.. i'll let you know how it goes. and if you don't here from me...well....it didn't work and i'm computerless mad.gif

ok, well I guess at least it didn't go bad. now running f5f...still at 341fsb frown.gif got another question.....

they make new a new bios to fix things, is it possible that a newer bios is holding me back? I mean why would a board have the "ability" (in the bios) to go up to 700fsb, it 341 is as high as it can go? I was at the gigabyte site and all ver of the bios are available for down load f1, f2, f3, f4, and f5f. I don't wanna keep trying diff bios till I DO end up breaking stuff, but I do wanna go faster. or am I just at the limit of this board? I know its a 'budget' board. but honestly, it doesn't do to terribly bad.

Just want to point out that both CPUs are based on the same tech. The E5300 is core2 architecture. Yes the extra 1mb of cache really makes that much difference.

Just cause it says Pentium doesn't mean it's netburst.

Also try resetting your bios/CMOS, had a few times where a board wouldn't post after a CPU swap until I reset the cmos

you know I read that somewhere, that they were both c2d / same architecture, they both wolfdale, isn't that the chip? the 7200 also has SSE4.1. although I don't quite understand what an instruction set is or what it does. . . .usually bigger numbers mean better thumb.gif man if 1MB make that much diff, how much faster would it be if I picked up a CPU with something like 6MB or I think I even seen some w/ 12MB.

oh, and the gateway runs fine now with the e5200. it had to be the fsb on the chip. and the board is kinda broke..i don't have to reset the cmos, it does it everytime its turned off. i'm really surprised it still runs. bout 6 months ago trying to get a fan connector off the board I used a knife to pry up, and shorted the + and - fan connector. it was turned off, but not unplugged. didn't quite realize even off there is still power going through the board. toasted the psu, the power button doesn't work, Ethernet doesnt' work, and the usb will only run at USB1.0. I have a power switch connected straight to the green wire on the psu, just have to unplug it to turn it off. not sure what I fried. . . .i'd fix it if I knew.

I think this is why the E7200 doesn't work on that board.
