True, but consider the rising temperature inside the case, which I guess can be called the internal ambient temperature.

The temp inside the case is the ambient temp, motherboards even have sensor that measures it.

Yes, "ambient temp" always refers to room temp.  "Case temp" refers to the temp inside the case.

If everyone would keep these terms separate, then there would be no confusion.

UPDATE: well I 'kinda' got past 341. . . easytune. It tries to update my bios when I restart (so I had to turn auto-load off) then I get a double boot, and bios reset. just gotta load it up when windows starts. either way. i'm almost at 3.9GHz. I ran my benches in AIDA64, i'm now running DRAM linked. so 200MHz less than I've been running but according to the benches it is reading/writing 1GB/s faster and latency is 10ns faster. so running the ram slower w/ a faster cpu is faster? huh... I still got a little playing with it to do. i'm gonna try my hardest to hit 4GHz. rolleyes.gifthumb.gif

Many mother boards have an ambient temp sensor. Which temp do you think it reads? I have never seen a temperature reading that says "case temp".

The way I figure it is that the air in the case is component's ambience, so that temperature is the ambient temp.

Maybe I'm wrong but that just makes sense to me.

I've never seen an ambient temp (not saying there isn't) I always see system temp. which would be the case temp. technically you would be right, case temp would be the components ambient.....but...'you' cant say that. because when 'you' say ambient it means room...(because your not a component) tongue.gif

back to me. I hit 4.37 with fsb 460. knew I could get higher smile.gif might try for more later rolleyes.gif

No, they have a System sensor.

During my 4+ years here on OCN, the only way I've seen "ambient temp" used is to describe your room temperature.  When people want to talk about the temperature inside the case, they get more specific and say things like "case temperature".

Besides:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ambient

  1. of the surrounding area or environment: The tape recorder picked up too many ambient noises. The temperature in the display case was 20° lower than the ambient temperature.
  2. completely surrounding; encompassing: the ambient air.
  3. creating a certain reaction or mood, often a subconscious one, by being wherever people tend to be: ambient advertising on a shopping cart.
  4. pertaining to or noting sounds that create a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.
  5. pertaining to or noting close and constant social contact and communication fostered by the Internet or the use of digital devices: social-networking sites that enable ambient intimacy and awareness.

I don't know, but I'm not sure if it matters.
