[PG] Valve Sued In Germany Over Game Ownership - Page 8

Let us take a look at the scenario where they would allow us to resell our used games.
There is a Market button on steam, that allows you to buy used games at a cheaper price. There is a quantity of those games being sold. Lets say it is 40% cheaper than the original price. We of course will buy the used games, rather than the new ones. The company that made the game, now gets no money, Valve, now gets no money from sales of the new games, and in return this will Lead to developers who already hate PC gamers, develop even less, due to lower revenue returns and quantity of games sold. Valve in return won't be able to afford to give us the Sale prices that we get right now, which let's be honest, a lot of you LOVE buying games for 1-10$ each, which you could not do with a console game even if it was used. In the end, the developers would either do even LESS for PC gamers, which they have every right to do if they get no money from used games, than they will take their business elsewhere, OR the developers will increase the prices of the games, and Valve will stop doing it's sale prices, which lets be honest is probably more than half of your steam Library comes from Sale Prices. Either way the consumer will hurt more in the end.

There is a way around it so that Valve still makes some money back, as well as the company that made the game, by let's say, getting 20% of the sold Used game's price. So lets say you sell a game for 10$, you get 8, and the rest goes to Valve/Developers. But, if this is the case, I still think they would stop doing their sales, since than there would be a problem of what is the right price for X used video game, do I sell it at a discount of the original, or do I sell it at a discount of the Discounted price I bought it at? Ect ect. Honestly there is little you can do, to make it so that the consumer is happy in this situation.

That is just my 2cents.gif

Dude why is it that used sales works in every other place except digital material. The ANSWER is GREED! Because of the physical ability of software companies to write code to prevent used sales etc is the only reason this happens. So what if EA doesn't make money on the used game. They already made on money on the game. Toyota doesn't make money on my used Carola when joe neighbor buys it from me. Software companies have no right to make a profit off used games. They sold the product. its over. Done. Asus sure isn't taking a cut of every used motherboard sale on OCN. They seem to be doing fine.
And to the guy that said by a used game for cheap and sell for 75%PROFIT or something, who would seriously buy that? I would buy the cheaper product every time. So good luck with your profit that high. The only issue with used digital copies is that it kinda doesnt matter that it is used. So basically the used copy is as good as the new copy. but that does NOT mean you should be restricted from reselling it.

3. I said this to some of you a while ago

Why should Valve offer a service if they can't make money from it? They are a bussiness afterall to make profit.

That's your first mistake.

Steam isn't just a retailer. Its a cloud service.

But they already have our money when we purchased their games in the first place. If I want to trade for example Batman Arkham City with one of my friends, I should be able to do that without having to pay them again.

Ask yourself why PC games as a whole are cheaper and drop in price much much faster than console games? This is the way the market has played out. I'd much rather deal with not being able to sell a game than pay console prices for games. No used game discount is gonna amount to 75% off for the buyer the way we can snag games on sale currently.

You too are ignoring the service that Steam provides.

Buying a boxed game gets you a CD and CD Key. Buying a steam game gets you a CD Key and access to steam's cloud service. Reselling a steam game is not like reselling a boxed game.

Wanting to sell your CD Key is one thing, but its seems people here are expecting Valve to let them transfer their access to Steam as well. There is no more obvious reason why Valve should have to allow that, than why Disneyland should have to allow me to resell my season pass. Buying access is not the same thing as buying a good.

I'll take a good Steam sale over paying double for a "used" copy any day smile.gif

I agree with people arguing this will ultimately be poor for consumers. I stopped buying new releases a couple years ago aside from some momentary lapses in judgement (Black Ops 2, Diablo 3). Nobody is holding a gun to your head making you buy $60 games. I don't see Steam being able to operate like this. If game ownership gets tossed around and people keep downloading the game, how do you justify Steam serving up the bandwidth for that? I never entered into the realm of digital distribution with the expectation of being able to sell my purchases. Really you're just setting up a 3rd party market outside of Steam operating within Steam that annoys me just thinking about it. Exactly like ticket brokers, bucket of yuck. Bad for the industry.

Even if it is implemented, I will not use it. I would much rather support the developer whether or not I like the game. Enter at your own risk.
