Upgrading internet,( Last min questions)

Thread Starter
Recently been updating internet devices in the house, getting ready (or trying to) prepare to have HD stream for TVs PCs ect. Im trying to make sure Ive covered all bases before upgrading my internet subscription. Im not great with the whole MBs vs mbps conversion thing so that Why I ask here.

Right now my current Setup is

Router: Asus RT-N66U
Modem: speedstream 4300

My concern is my current internet speed results via speed-test are telling my that there's no way in hell I could handle HD streaming, and atm I believe it.

Low numbers I know

From what Ive been seeing on the net, there seems to be HUGE differences in what people receive for internet even though the equipment is the same, Ive seen people achieve hundreds of mbps with the N66U and Ive seen things like 40mb with the thing. So i just need to make sure that its an ISP issue and not a modem issue. Ive seen post where some reported huge boost in there download and upload Mbs just by upgrading to a aftermarket modem and not using the ISP issued one.

So what else can I do on my end to ensure I get the highest possible quality for the internet for my goal of HD streaming? Do I get rid of the old modem, is that's whats holding me back? or do I up my internet speed subscription? Now as of right now I think im at the homestretch on getting this all done. I just need to make sure my next step is the right one.

Any tips/suggestions appreciated.

If you're paying for a 3/1 line (as what's shown in the screenshot), you'll have to upgrade to a faster connection through your ISP if you want more. No hardware will give you a magical boost in speeds unless you switch to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem (if your ISP supports it). Even then, you'll probably see 6-8 down max.

I had no idea a DOCSIS 3.0 modem could actually make a boost in your internet speed like that, ill keep that in mind. So what speeds am I looking if I do need to upgrade with my ISP?

It all depends on how much you want to spend and what they offer. Anything above or around 10Mbps down will be fine for streaming 1080p content.
