Attention LAN Gamers!

Thread Starter
Hopefully if you have reached this thread you are someone who attends LAN parties.

I am in my final year at university studying product design and for my final project (worth half my degree) I have decided to design a PC case focussed towards LAN (i.e. a full size case that allows easy transportation to LAN events)

If you would like to help me out, all I need is a very short (1 or 2 mins max) 10 question survey filling out.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DQYN6QP

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me out, and if you have any miscellaneous thoughts towards LAN gaming - perhaps problems you have encountered etc then please post and let me know.

If enough people express an interest in the project I may do periodical updates.

Cheers!

PS. I have posted this thread on two other sites to maximise the feedback I get. Let it be said that I very much want to hear what members Overclock.net have to say just as much as any other smile.gif

I hated taking my switch 810 to a lan when it had about half a gallon of water in it, probably 60+ lbs. If you are looking to make a full sized tower lan accessible give it some wheels and pray for elevators and not stairs.

Done. Good luck with your project, prob a good idea to start a build thread and toss around ideas. And post pics, bc pics or it didnt happen! biggrin.gif

Thanks for the responses so far guys!

Rickles: note taken. Water cooling certainly presents more of a weight problem than air.

rhyneman: Given that I've posted on a few forums I'll probably have to have a central build log on one of the sites. Saying that, steam is one of them and that's probably not the best place for a log.

Keep the surveys and feedback coming people!

Took the survey.

One thing for me that I want to say is that if you make a LAN case. You need to make a carry bag that goes with it.

Now, this would be no normal bag that holds a small tower. You need to make a back that holds everything. A wrap around sling with cover for the lcd, then pockets on the bag that can hold the tower plus mouse, headset, and mouse pad. A pair of clip straps that hold the keyboard to the whole thing.

Much like the Roccat Tusko, but with a pocket that holds the computer ect.

EDIT: The reason I think a single bag that holds it all would be best is that If I have computer in one hand and lcd in another, that door in front of me aint going to open it self.

Firstly - some nice chaps on the OC3D forum pointed out that the 6th question was very ambiguous. I have now fixed it so it makes sense.

@ejohnson, yes I agree. depending on the results of the survey, the case may have to be designed for air travel which means making it fit within hand luggage requirements and meaning that an all-in-one bag would seem the most sensible.

Weight looks to be the biggest issue right now. I want a more elegant solution than sticking some wheels on a case though...

Have you looked at the design on the alienware x51, or the tiki?

Its a thin tower with a full sized gpu. But they put the gpu pointing up and down just below the motherboard.

I often look for ways to make a sff, thin tower with full sized power. If you use 2.5 hdds, you can save alot of space. External psu is nice for heat, but not for travel. Making a internal psu would be fine, and could actually be used as a warm air outlet.
