I'm debating playing it with the 1.3 mod.

Let me know what you think. I'll be honest the added difficulty part worries me a bit. There are quite a few battles in FFT that weren't exactly easy.

That 1.3 mod is significantly harder, from what I remember (maybe I'm thinking of a previous version), though most maps not overwhelming. The original game was overall a cakewalk, though just a few battles were of some marginal difficulty. With the mod you actually need to revive characters when they die, and frequently. For battles in the original, if you could pick which set of characters you'd rather have (the enemy's or the player's) you'd easily pick the player-side characters as they have much better equipment and abilities. With the mod, usually the enemy-side characters are better as a whole, mostly from being greater in number and overall not much worse on a per-character basis. And that's how it should be, as hopefully player tactical skills are superior to enemy AI.

Overall I'm not much of a fan of FF series. Several games were pretty good for their times, particularly FF1, but there are plenty of other JRPGs out there that would suit many tastes better. Might be better off trying to get into Tales of series, or maybe even Dragon Quest, if you're looking at huge JRPG franchises. No reason to go with FF. Or SMT/Persona, though that wouldn't be a personal recommendation from me.

There was no variety in weapons or armor, you simply had one set that was the best at that current time for every character. You had absolutely no build options in FF7 compared to even older games such as FFV and FFVI. It was shaming to play.

I've got to ask. Please tell me how there was more customization in VI? And no, Materia was not the only way to customize your guy. You have equip-able items with different stats just like the previous games. Different characters were better suited for different builds (Cloud = Str/Melee, Aeris = Healer, Barret = Ranged/Str etc) just like the previous games. And you picked your party accordingly. Different characters were meant for different builds, just like most RPGs these days. Shaming to play? The dialogue and depth to the game was the pinnacle of the series at the time (VI was great too), still is in many's opinions. It created multiple game and movie spin-offs because people wanted more of the characters and the story. If you didn't use the better items, you were gimped, just like the previous games (any RPG for that matter). I just cant agree with your statements at all having played every game in the series (besides FFXIII-2, I couldn't bring myself to finish that game).

No breeding Materia (magicite) in 6. What you found in 6 was what you had, so there was no putting the same build on everyone. Equipment mattered because there were dozens of items that actually did something other than up your frickin' damage in the late game that were very, very useful, especially when combined with other items. FF7 doesn't have that. Leveling up you grab what's in the shops and that's your gear until you find the next shop, or, occasionally something in a chest which is quickly replaced by something in the next shop. Everything was 100% linear upgrades. There was absolutely no thought required for equipment, just grab it and use it. Materia only required minimal interaction.

I'm not even cherry picking here, just grabbing random videos. The dialog in 7 is childish, and I'm pretty sure that I could count the number of words used with more than 3 syllables on one hand. Don't bring up dialogue in 5 and 6 please, the translations were abbreviated to make up for the fact that a direct translation of the japanese dialogue would have made the english dialogue scenes much longer due to the amount of box scrolling required, they cut a lot of nuance out of it to keep the pace of the gameplay flowing. English takes up a lot more space than japanese, and them were some tiny dialogue boxes back in the day... TINY...

Please don't go any further. 7 was the first (no, second actually, can't forget Mystic Quest) of many tragedies in the FF series. Just because it was the first to have a runaway marketing campaign and mass appeal does not make it a superior game.

Don't get me wrong. I like FF7. I own 3 different copies of it. But it's not even on the same level as the good FF games. It really ruffles my feathers when people think that it's even comparable.
